The Denver Broncos are still over $20 million under the salary cap.
Osi Umenyiora wants a raise and out of New York.
To this point the Broncos have tried to seek out value free agents to help piece together a roster that coach John Fox can compete with. Names like Daniel Fells, David Anderson and Ty Warren are not household names and probably never will be.
However, even though it appears that the Broncos are not interested in paying for all-pro talent, they need to open up the wallet and welcome Umenyiora with open arms.
The tough part for the Broncos is not the money that Umenyiora would command for his contract, but rather the picks required to trade for him with the Giants. Yahoo! Sports is reporting that the Giants are now looking for at least a second-round pick and perhaps a late-round pick as well.
The Denver Broncos are definitely in the rebuilding phase and parting with picks seems to be counter to what John Elway was tasked to do.
Still, the opportunity to land a huge name that would have an immediate impact on the defense might be worth whatever young talent the team gives up.
The combination of Umenyiora and Dumervil, as well as Von Miller from the outside, would be a very formidable pass rush. In fact, it might become one of the best in the NFL once Miller gets up to speed.
The Denver Broncos are in desperate need of some positive buzz, or at least some news that distracts from the endless bickering amongst Tebow supporters and Orton supporters.
Denver would also seem to have a leg up on the other teams that Yahoo! Sports are reporting as interested parties. With Seattle, San Diego, Baltimore and St. Louis all showing interest as well, it is clear that Denver presents the best option for a higher second-round draft pick.
Although, if the Broncos do land Umenyiora, and John Fox rejuvenates the run game, it might not be too crazy to think that the Broncos could drastically improve on their four wins from a season ago.
Regardless of how it gets done, John Elway needs to take a very serious run at this opportunity. The acquisition of Osi Umenyiora would make the 2011 offseason a success no matter how the other personnel decisions pan out.
