NCAA Prospects Weekly Roundup

Anders Lee, a sophomore at Notre Dame and a 6th round draft pick of the Islanders in the 2009 NHL Draft, continued his great play this season over the weekend against Bowling Green.  Lee leads the nation in goals with 10 and is fourth in points with 13.  Lee has to be regarded as an early leader in the Hobey Baker race and could prove to be a 6th round steal for the Islanders.  Lee is physically ready to play in the NHL and, when he does turn pro, I don?t anticipate him being in the minors for long.

Caps Defense Stumbles; Lose to Vancouver 7-4

The Washington Capitals, after starting the season on a 7 game winning streak, are officially now on their first losing streak of the season.  Unlike the game in Edmonton, the Caps will be unable to blame this loss on ?not getting the right bounces.?  The Caps may have finally put together a second period worth remembering, but their 1st and 3rd periods were downright awful, especially defense-wise.

Off and Running: BCS Championship Chase Week by Week

On Sunday the new BCS rankings were released as Week 9 was completed. The following is how the top 14 fell into place: LSU, Alabama, Oklahoma State, Stanford, Boise State, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Oregon, South Carolina, Nebraska, Clemson, Virginia Tech, Houston and Kansas State.

I'm going to preview the rest of the year week by week for those teams starting from Week 10 until Championship week. It is general consensus that those would be with the only shots at the BCS Championship this coming January, so that's why I set the cut off at 14.

One Of Golf's Most Idiotic Rules Got Fixed This Week

rory mcilroy us open

Golf's governing body announced a sensible fix to its harsh ball-movement rules this week.

A player addressing his ball will no longer be penalized if it randomly moves.

So if a gust of wind or something comes by and moves Tiger's ball a half inch, it's no longer his fault.

This probably should have been the case all along.

But golf is instituting the change after high-profile players like Rory McIlroy and Webb Simpson got burned with ball-movement penalties this season.

Another new change is that players will be allowed to smooth over sand or dirt before playing from a hazard as long as it doesn't improve their lie.

So expect a bit more landscaping from players in 2012.

world series game six walk off

In the seventh inning of last night's game six, "hundreds and hundreds and hundreds" of fans left the game as the Texas Rangers took a commanding 7-4 lead over the St. Louis Cardinals.

The same cannot be said about the television ratings as they continued to climb throughout the night.

According to Darren Rovell, game six had an overnight rating of 13.8 (each point represents 1% of viewers). That was highest rating for any World Series game since 2009.

But that average rating does not give a true sense of how many people tuned in during the game's biggest moments.

According to a source with FOX, last night's ratings for game six averaged a 12.6 from 8-11:00pm. But that number jumped to an average of 15.6 during the 11:00pm hour, peaking at 17.0 at 11:45pm. After midnight, the average rating was even higher at 16.1.

This would have to be seen as good news for FOX heading into game seven tonight. The last game seven in the World Series (2002), drew a 17.9 rating. With people jumping on the bandwagon late last night, and the lack of any football games competing for attention tonight, FOX should easily outpace that number this year.

BCS Rankings 2011: Stanford's Struggles with USC Prove They Are Overrated

While NFL teams Suck for Luck, Andrew needed a little luck to help him and the Cardinal past the USC Trojans. Stanford's 3-OT win was exciting, but it proves they are ranked too high.

It is true, it was a conference game and a bit of a rivalry. But when you consider the Stanford schedule has been soft all year long, a struggle of this magnitude against a rather weak Trojans' team is cause for alarm.

You can really make a strong case that Stanford should have lost this game. The questionable personal foul call that extended the Cardinal drive in the fourth quarter and the fumble at the end of the third overtime were key plays that Stanford benefited from.

Luck is a remarkable prospect, Urban Meyer called him the best NFL prospect at QB since Peyton Manning. Of course, he said this after his prerequisite mention of Tim Tebow, but the Manning reference was sincere.

The issue is the Cardinal have future NFL talent sprinkled throughout their team. If they were to reach the National Championship, they'll likely face a team that will field units where 60 to 70 percent will play on the next level.

The Oregon game on November 12th will be the telling game in this great Cardinal season. I'm willing to bet Oregon will show Stanford what an elite college football team really looks like.

The Ducks with one loss to the top team in the nation, on a neutral field is a better team than the Cardinal and they will prove that in Week 11.

Dejuan Miller Video: Watch Sooners' Amazing One-Footed TD in Back of End Zone

Dejuan Miller is a very athletic receiver who pulled down an incredible grab in the back of the end zone for the Oklahoma Sooners for a touch down against Kansas State.

The Grab was a beautiful one as he jumped into the air and hauled down the catch and had the awareness to get one foot in as the Kansas State defender was pulling him down.

There is not many times where a receiver gets to show their athleticism during a big game against two teams with high seeds.

Dejuan Miller did just that.

His catch is one to watch a few times.

Look at the foot and then look at the coverage he had all over him.

He showed NFL type potential on the play and a few more highlight reels like this one and he could easily become a household name going forward.

The Sooners will need him if they are going to have their strong passing game continue to have their offense as one of the best in the country.

Okay for good measure watch it one more time.

Houston Texans: Possible Milestones Against Jacksonville

When the Houston Texans take to the field at Reliant Stadium to face the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, they will look to raise their record against the Jaguars to 10-9 in all-time franchise history.

Here are eight milestones the Texans could reach with a solid performance against the Jaguars:

  1. They need one fumble recovery to equal their entire total from the 2010 season. Houston has recovered four fumbles in 2011. The defense recovered five in 2010.
  2. They need a blocked kick to set a franchise record with three. The Texans have two blocked kicks so far this season, tying the franchise record set in 2003.
  3. They can hold an opponent to less than 20 points for the fifth time this season.
  4. They can win time of possession for the seventh time in eight games this season.
  5. They can score on their opening drive for the fifth time this season.
  6. They can record an interception for the seventh consecutive game.
  7. They can post a positive turnover margin for the sixth time in eight games.
  8. They can out-rush their opponents for the fifth time this season and the second consecutive game.

Are any of these milestones achievable on Sunday?

Your guess is as good as mine, but as this is professional football, anything can (and usually will) happen.

The Improving Ottawa Senators

from Allen Panzeri of Senators Extra at the Ottawa Citizen, Paul MacLean works on a small time frame. During games, he goes from one timeout to the next, from one goal to the next, from one period to the next.

His team is a work in progress. One day he expects it will be pretty good, but he?s not about to say that it is today.

?I see this team improving just a little bit every day, just like we talked about at training camp,? he said on Friday. ?We?re building a foundation for something down the road when we?re going to be good, and that takes doing a little bit better every day.

?We?ve seen this team get better. We?ve seen it be bad and improve, and show great character and learn what it takes to win and how to win, and those are all very good building blocks to build that foundation we?re talking about.

?So I think with every one of those blocks we put in, it gets a little more stable.

?I don?t think it?s the Great Wall of China yet, but it?s all positive signs.?

Jason Spezza, the team?s most valuable player so far, said the players are feeling a lot better about themselves.

Boxing KO of the Day: Juan Manuel Marquez Shows Counter-Punching Power vs Jaca

Entering the third edition of the Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez saga, one of the main area's Pacquiao needs to worry about is Marquez's exceptional counter punching.

As demonstrated in Marquez's 2006 fight against Jimrez Jaca, Marquez showed proof that he can knock his opponent out on powerful, pinpoint accurate punches.

As Jaca threw a combination Marquez dodged his attack and gave a quick combo that included two powerful left hooks, sending Jaca straight to the canvas and knocking him out; though he was sitting up the entire 10-count.

In their two previous fights, Marquez has given Pacquiao trouble with his counter punching, and if Marquez is able to get a solid clean combo off on a counter-punching attack, the results of the rubber match could fall in Marquez's favor with a KO victory.

Pacquiao is looking to get a decisive victory and settle the controversy, which has followed the past two fights after going to questionable decisions, once and for all.

With Pacquiao saying he wants to knock Marquez out this time around, there should be more than enough opportunities to use his defensive skills to land a KO combo, and hand Pac Man his first loss in the ring in six years.

Note: the knockout comes at the 7:07 mark of the video clip.

DO OR DIE: The Best World Series Game 7's Ever

World Series Game Sevens

Game seven.

The thought sends shivers down a sports' fans spine.

That will be the prevailing feeling among Cardinals and Rangers' fans as the Fall Classic's final game takes center stage Friday night.

After an epic game six, will game seven live up to the hype?

Only time will tell.

But as you prepare for baseball's final game of the season, take a look back at some of the best game sevens to ever happen.

1912: Boston Red Sox 3, New York Giants 2 - 10 Innings

It was the first time a game seven ever reached extra innings.  And Giants Hall-of-Famer Christy Mathewson threw every pitch. Manager John McGraw decided to live or die with his pitcher. That backfired when Tris Speaker hit a game-tying single. One batter later, a sacrifice fly concluded Boston’s comeback.

1924: Washington Senators 4, New York Giants 3 - 12 Innings

It’s a shame television coverage didn’t exist for this one. Because the longest game seven in World Series history had everything from manager chess matches to fluke plays. The Senators player-manager Bucky Harris intentionally started a mediocre pitcher and pulled him two batters into the game to dictate the Giants’ lineup. In the eighth, a simple ground ball hit a pebble and skipped over a Giants infielder to tie the game. Harris then brought in 18-year veteran Walter Johnson for a critical ninth-inning strikeout. Then, in the 12th-inning, a tailor-made double play hit ANTOHER rock and shot past the Giants' infield as the Senators' scored the game-ending run. You can’t make this stuff up.

1960: Pittsburgh Pirates 10, New York Yankees 9

This may be the most memorable baseball game of all-time. 9-9. Bottom of the ninth. Bill Mazeroski. The shot heard ‘round the world. It remains the only game seven walk-off home run ever hit.

Allen Iverson Wants Another Shot At The NBA

Allen Iverson

Last we heard from Allen Iverson, he was breaking ankles in Turkey, in large part because he couldn't find a job in the NBA and possibly because he was broke. Now Iverson says he wants one more shot at the NBA.

"I’ll play for anybody...Hopefully, one squad will believe in me and we will go from there. That would be a lot better than having to go overseas."

But even if the 36-year old Iverson can't find a job in the NBA, he made it clear that he is not done playing basketball. "I’m not going to let it end like this, and I don’t want it to end like this," said Iverson.

Iverson is 17th on the all-time scoring list with 24,368. He last appeared in the NBA during the 2009-10 season when he averaged 13.8 points per game with the Memphis Grizzlies and Philadelphia 76ers.
