Pat McEnroe Resigns as Davis Cup Captain

PATRICK McENROE RESIGNS AS UNITED STATES DAVIS CUP CAPTAIN

Longest-Tenured Captain in U.S. Davis Cup History Will Lead
Country for the Last Time at World Group Play-off in Bogota, Sept. 17-19

Photobucket
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., September 6, 2010 -- The USTA and Patrick McEnroe announced today that McEnroe will resign as U.S. Davis Cup captain immediately following the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group Play-off against Colombia in Bogota, September 17-19. Now in his 10th year as captain, McEnroe is the longest-tenured captain in U.S. Davis Cup history. He led the U.S. to its record 32nd Davis Cup title in 2007, its first title since 1995 -- ending the longest drought in U.S. Davis Cup history. He has compiled a 16-9 record thus far; his 16 victories are second all-time in U.S. Davis Cup history behind Tom Gorman?s 18 wins.

?It is with a heavy heart that I am resigning as Davis Cup captain, but it is a decision I felt was best for the team and myself right now,? McEnroe said. ?Davis Cup is a significant time commitment and this decision will allow me to focus more energy on my family and to the USTA Player Development program?

?Patrick is the one the finest and most decorated captains in U.S. Davis Cup history,? said Lucy S. Garvin, Chairman of the Board and President, USTA. ?He leaves an indelible mark on the Davis Cup, and has always handled his captaincy with class and distinction. Patrick is and will remain a tremendous asset to U.S. tennis as he continues to lead our player development efforts.?

The U.S. will face Colombia in the World Group Play-off next week. It is the first time since 2005, and just the fifth time since the World Group was instituted in 1981, that the U.S. has had to compete in the play-off round. The U.S. is 3-1 in World Group Play-offs, having defeated Belgium on red clay in its last appearance in the World Group Play-off.

?Patrick changed the culture of Davis Cup in the United States, creating a true team environment and a sense of camaraderie that the U.S. has never before seen,? said Jim Curley, Chief Professional Tournaments Officer, USTA. ?He has been a champion of the competition in every sense of the word, and elevated the stature of the event in this country.?

The World Group Play-off against Belgium in 2005 was the first of 10 consecutive U.S. Davis Cup ties that featured the lineup of Andy Roddick, James Blake and the doubles team of Bob and Mike Bryan, shattering the previous U.S. record for most consecutive ties with the same lineup. The previous record was three consecutive ties by eight different combinations.

According to the report on CBS Jim Courier is very interested in the job. No one can deny that Patrick made the US Davis Cup team into a force to be reckoned with. If it is Courier he's got big shoes to fill.

The last Slam of the year is upon us and I won't have a whole lot of time to watch or write about it. I'm in the final stretch of my campaign to become a member of the Maine House of Representatives, it's already harvest season, and I'm already tired enough to hibernate for the winter.

I'll watch what I can watch and report what I can report as best I can. As always, we appreciate those of you who provide great match reports in the comments. If you've got a special report to submit, please use my email address. I'll check it more regularly throughout the fortnight.

Enjoy the US Open.

US OPEN 2010: Men's Semifinals Preview

By MadProfessah

Roger Federer SUI (2) vs. Novak Djokovic SRB (3). For the fourth year in a row, Roger Federer must defeat Novak Djokovic to reach the final of the US Open. Three of their four meetings have been in the semifinals in New York, and it should not be forgotten that the Serb is the last person to beat the Swiss player at this stage in a grand slam, at the 2008 Australian Open. Federer leads their career head-to-head 10-5 (8-4 on hard courts) and should be expected to win again. However, it's unlikely to be easy. Although Djokovic has only ever won set against Federer in New York and lost 12, but almost every set has been very close including 3 tiebreak sets. Djokovic will probably not be affected by a partisan New York crowd rooting for his defeat and a mouth-watering Nadal-Federer final; he beat Roger in the final of his own tournament in his hometown of Basel last year. That win was indoors, and it is very likely that the conditions will become a factor on Saturday. So far, Federr has been the player to take the most advantage of the difficult conditions of anyone in the draw. PREDICTION: Federer in 4 sets or Djokovic in 5 sets.

Rafael Nadal ESP (1) vs. Stanislas Wawrinka SUI (25) Mikhail Youzhny RUS (12). Nadal has been playing some of his best tennis, ever, in New York, especially his serve which has now improved to the point where the Spaniard is regularly reaching 130 mph. He has now become the player least likely to have their service broken. Nadal did well to dismiss Fernando Verdasco in straight sets in the quarterfinals and has yet to lose a set in the tournament. Youzhny has a lost at least one set ni every round he has played here, except for a straight set first round victory. Surprisingly, Youzhny has quite a good record against Nadal, with 4 wins to 7 losses (4 to 3 on hard courts) and has a notable victory over Nadal at the U.S. Open, having beaten the then-20-year-old Spaniard in 4-sets in the 2006 Quarterfinals. However, neither player is the same player they were four years ago, with both having improved tremendously. Nadal is now the #1 player in the world and riding a 19 grand-slam match winning streak, while Youzhny is just out of the Top 10 at #14 in the world. The Russian played a grueling 5-set match to dispose of Stanislas Wawrinka in the quarters and has demonstrated that he is not intimidated by any opponent. The question does he have the game to prevent the most anticipated match in tennis history? Doubtful.  PREDICTION: Nadal in 4 sets.

Kleybanova wins second career title in Seoul

SEOUL, South Korea (AP)?Russia?s Alisa Kleybanova defeated Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic 6-1, 6-3 to win the Korea Open on Sunday.

Zakopalova struggled against the powerful stroke play and serving of fifth-seeded Kleybanova, who raced to a 5-0 lead in the first set.

?I am incredibly happy, and I really appreciate the Russian fans who came here this week,? said Kleybanova, who received $37,000 in prize money. ?Every match is tough and the final is always a special day. I want to thank Klara for a great match and I am so happy I won this title in Seoul.?

Playing in her 11th career final, Zakopalova moved into a 3-1 lead in the second set, but missed the chance to level the match.

?I would like to congratulate her (Kleybanova). She played very well and she had a good tournament,? Zakopalova said. ?Of course I wanted to be the winner today, but she was very good and deserves the win.?

The win is the second title for the 28th-ranked Kleybanova, 21, following a win at Kuala Lumpur earlier this year.

Federer Defends Cincinnati Title Over Fish

Roger Federer won his first non-major final of the year after losing 3 finals in a row (on 3 different surfaces: Madrid to Rafael NadalHalle to Lleyton Hewitt and Toronto to Andy Murray) in Cincinnati on Sunday over American Mardy Fish. The title was his 53rd overall, tying Bjorn Borg on the all-time list at 5th. It was Federer's 17th ATP Masters series title, tying Andre Agassi but still one behind Nadal's 18.

Federer has now won the Cincinnati title in 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2010. Next year it will become a combined male-female 8-day event (immediately following simultaneous men's and women's tournaments in Toronto and Montreal).

The match with Fish was a close, high-quality 3-set affair featuring 2 tiebreaks, one break of serve and only 6 breakpoints between the two players. The final score was 6-7(5) 7-6(1) 6-4. In the first set, Federer had 4 breakpoints and failed to convert any of them due to brilliant serving by Fish. Federer faced one breakpoint in the second set but was able to get through to a tiebreak. In the first set tiebreaker Federer held a 5-4 lead, but Fish played a brilliant point to even the breaker at 5-all and Federer played a loose point to be down 6-5. Fish won the first set on a service winner. In the second set tiebreaker Federer was much sharper, jumping to a quick 4-1 lead and never looked in danger of losing that breaker. The only break in the match came in the 9th game of the third set where, for once, after facing a break point Fish was unable to make a first serve and eventually lost the breakpoint and the game, and eventually the match when Federer served it out pretty easily on his second match point.

Rafael Nadal’s chronic knee tendinitis seems like old news – these days we’re busy talking about the three Majors he won this year, his career slam and his imminent ascent to GOAThood (just ask Pete Sampras.) But remember that during this very same season Rafa retired in the quarters of the Australian Open because of [...]

Teenage Angst

Daria GavrilovaThere were point penalties, warnings, foot faults, stiff-armed fist pumps, and cries in Russian. There were moonballs thrown up so high it seemed we might be back in 1981, but then two-fisted backhands and Western forehands brought us back to the present. There were screams after points won and after unforced errors. The crowd gasped and stared at the exclamations and laughed nervously.

Most of this drama came from the side of Daria Gavrilova, the top-seeded Russian in the U.S. Open junior girls? competition during her semifinal match against the 15th-seeded American Sloane Stephens. The two played on Court 7 on Saturday during the men?s semifinal matches, and I caught the third set after Rafael Nadal reached the final in a hurry.

You can?t judge a player by one final-set performance, but you can learn a lot about her. Stephens started the set well and was quickly up a break. Her serve looked strong, her ground strokes were hitting their marks, and she seemed capable of moving forward to finish off points. As for Gavrilova, however, think of a female version of Lleyton Hewitt. She thrives on drama and really fires herself up. If you aren?t a fan of grunting, look out: Gavrilova is a shrieker la Victoria Azarenka and Michelle Larcher de Brito. I?d call her an all-court screamer: She does it at the point of contact, sometimes moments afterwards, sometimes not at all, and other times while hitting lobs.

I?ll give Gavrilova this: She knows how to win. She eventually defeated Stephens and went on to win the girls? title Sunday over fellow Russian Yulia Putintseva 6-3, 6-2. Whether you call it winning ugly, making your opponent win it, or getting into your opponent?s head, Gavrilova does it all. In the semifinals, she took all power off her shots, forced Stephens into long rallies, scrambled well, and made sure she was firmly entrenched in Stephens? head. Stephens? serve started to miss, her ground strokes often found the net, and she ended up on the losing end of a final-set tiebreaker.

It?s hard to judge juniors. They?re teenagers, after all. Stephens seems to have the game, she just needs to translate it to wins. Gavrilova is steady but seems to be preoccupied with playing head games.

But yesterday, at least, these juniors were a better warm-up act to Roger Federer vs. Novak Djokovic than were Nadal and Youzhny.

Zakopalova, Kleybanova reach Korea Open final

SEOUL, South Korea (AP)?Top-seeded Nadia Petrova withdrew from the semifinals of the Korea Open on Saturday, leaving Czech opponent Klara Zakopalova with a place in the final against Russian Alisa Kleybanova.

Petrova was trailing 5-4 in the opening set when the Russian decided that she couldn?t continue due to illness, putting the 39th-ranked Zakopalova in Sunday?s decider at Seoul Olympic Park.

Fifth-seeded Kleybanova defeated eighth-seeded Agnes Szavay of Hungary, 6-3, 6-2 in the other semifinal. The first set lasted 62 minutes, partly due to Kleybanova needing six deuces to hold her serve in the opening game.

?In the first set, especially at the beginning of the set for a couple of games, we had many deuces and advantages. It was tough, really tough,? Kleybanova said. ?I wasn?t thinking about winning or losing, though, I just tried to focus on each point.?

The 28th-ranked Russian is aiming for her second career title after winning in Kuala Lumpur earlier this year.

Kudryavtseva tops Vesnina for Tashkent Open title

TASHKENT, Uzbekistan (AP)?Alla Kudryavtseva has won her first WTA Tour title, beating Elena Vesnina 6-4, 6-4 in an all-Russian final at the Tashkent Open.

Seventh-seeded Kudryavtseva broke the fourth-seeded Vesnina in the seventh game of the first set.

After an exchange of breaks midway through the second set, Kudryavtseva broke again in the seventh game and closed the match, firing an ace on the first of her two match points.

Kudryavtseva was the runner-up in Guangzhou, China, last weekend.

It was Vesnina?s second defeat in a final this season. She lost to another compatriot, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, in Istanbul in July.

The Battle in Bogota: U.S. vs. Colombia in Davis Cup

High up in the Andes Mountains lies the city of Santa Fe de Bogota, the capital of Colombia. Here at the bullring La Santamara is where the United States and Colombia will contest their Davis Cup World Group playoff. With an altitude of more than 8,000 feet, the conditions are brutal, and the battle between the two nations promises to be fierce.

For the Americans, it?s a must-win tie. A loss would relegate them to the Americas Zone, a symbolic slap in the face for any Grand Slam-hosting nation. Not so for the Colombians, they have had to claw their way up the zonal ladder over the years to reach their first ever World Group playoff tie.

For most Americans, the name Colombia brings up images of danger, drugs and violence. But Colombians would like the U.S. and rest of the world to know that those dark days are over. The two major drug cartels have been knocked out of operation and the armed resistance groups have been corralled into demilitarized zones. They don?t deny their history, but Colombia has moved on. Here they like to say that tough times don?t last, but tough people do.

The U.S. team is led by Patrick McEnroe as captain, and Jay Berger as coach. Mardy Fish is now in the role of veteran and big brother. Sam Querrey and John Isner are the new guns for hire taking over from Andy Roddick and James Blake. And young Ryan Harrison looks to be built battleship tough and has earned his spot on the team. The practice partners are rookies Chase Buchannan and Andrea Collarini. One of the U.S. team?s traditions is for the rookies to make a speech during the official team dinner. This time the task fell to Chase Buchannan while Andrea Collarini, who recently switched flags from Argentina to the U.S., translated in Spanish.

?It is such an honor to be here,? Buchannan began. ?I grew up watching Mardy Fish playing on television. And to be on the same Davis Cup team is a truly a dream come true.?

The Colombians have their Davis Cup rituals, too. For the last five years, they have gathered each and every night of the week during ties in the team suite to play poker. They?re a close-knit group, having grown up together and traveled as a team on the ATP tour throughout the year. They know what?s at stake for Colombia?their first chance to perform on the World Group stage.

?We are playing for history,? says Alejandro Falla, the leader of the team who took Roger Federer to five sets in this year?s Wimbledon. ?In order to compete with the best, you have to beat the best. The United States is and has long been a great team. But we believe that this tie is our moment, our destiny to do something great for tennis in Colombia and for our nation.?

It won?t be easy. They are playing the role of David against America?s Goliath.

?Our main goal is to get the return of serve in play,? Falla says. ?We want to make the Americans pay a heavy price for each and every point. Obviously, it is to our advantage to make them play long points.?

At 8,000 feet, catching your breath isn?t easy even for these well-conditioned athletes, which is to the advantage of the Colombians. The balls are also a factor: For this tie, they will use Tretorn pressureless balls, which aren?t used on the ATP tour.

?It?s the balls that are affecting us more than the altitude,? Fish says. ?For that we have to play really aggressive early. We are looking to strike first and finish the points early.?

Querrey agrees, and says the whole team must adjust their tactics. ?I am definitely going to attack early in the point,? Querrey says. ?You can?t hit with much spin with these balls in this altitude, so I?m going to hit hard, flat and, hopefully, inside the lines. It is tough to play defense here. Second serves are really difficult and you have to be committed to going for it and hope it drops in. We are the higher-ranked team, but the home site conditions are in their favor.

?It should be a great battle down here in Bogota.?
