Rafael Nadal
Nadal won three Grand Slam titles this season and has nine in total. (Matthew Stockman/Getty Images)

Mission: Almost Impossible
Does Rafael Nadal have a shot at winning 17 Grand Slam titles? Yes, though I think it's quite a long one. But I'll consider the possibility after his latest Slam conquest in Queens. Roger Federer has set the bar sky-high?he's averaged two major titles a season since 2003?and he's probably got another Slam or two left in him. For Nadal to someday pass him, he must take advantage of every opportunity he gets. He did that on Monday. Before he leapfrogged Pete Sampras on the all-time list, Federer never lost a Slam final to anyone except Nadal. Rafa will need to dominate his peers in similar fashion if he's to become the sultan of Slams.

There's Still Hope
The last great chance to see Federer play Nadal in the U.S. Open final passed us by this year. A Federer-Nadal final seemed destined to happen before Super Saturday, but even destiny couldn?t return some of Novak Djokovic?s fifth-set forehands. It seems less and less likely that we?ll see them meet in the ultimate stage of the U.S. Open?Federer is aging, Nadal may never play this well on hard courts again, and the big bruisers (Tomas Berdych, Robin Soderling, Juan Martin del Potro, etc.) should rebound in the coming years. The icons could still collide in Queens, however. Depending on where they're seeded in the next few seasons, a Federer-Nadal semifinal or quarterfinal isn?t out of the question. It wouldn?t be the same as a second Sunday showdown, but it would still be a can't-miss for fans.

Final Words from Flushing Meadows
As I sat down to lunch on the Court 5 bleachers one day last week, I spotted a ball boy who was old enough to be most ball boys? grandfather. I?m nearly certain it was Jerry Loughran, the man pictured here (discovered after a Google search of ?oldest ball boy?). The strangest thing was that he was working a juniors match. The ageless attendant was no slouch. After an overhead smash sent the ball flying outside the court, he cleared the barrier to retrieve it like a sprinter jumps a hurdle. He was clearly enjoying his work despite the hot temperatures, sparse crowd and meager wages. Good job, sir, and hope to see you next year.

Clijsters beats Jankovic in first match since Open

DOHA, Qatar (AP)?Kim Clijsters returned from a six-week break Wednesday with a 6-2, 6-3 win over an ailing Jelena Jankovic in the group stage of the WTA Championships.

The fourth-ranked Clijsters has not played since winning the U.S. Open in September because of a foot injury, but she won the first eight points without reply on her way to a comfortable win on Wednesday.

Jankovic said after her opening match?a defeat by Vera Zvonareva?that she was struggling with illness. The Serb took a 2-1 lead in the second set, but Clijsters came back to make it 4-2 before closing out the match when Jankovic double-faulted.

Clijsters looked comfortable on the court, moving easily and pulling off several cross court winners that Jankovic was unable to return. She did show a bit of rust, committing 10 double faults to go with her seven aces.

?I knew it was going to be a tough one,? Clijsters said. ?I?m happy with not everything I did today but trying to remember the positives and take those to tomorrow?s match.?

In Wednesday?s opening match, Zvonareva claimed her second win of the White Group by beating Victoria Azarenka 7-6 (4), 6-4 in a closely fought match.

The No. 2-ranked Russian also kept alive her slim hopes of finishing the year as the top-ranked player, although a win for Caroline Wozniacki later on Wednesday would secure the 20-year-old Dane the No. 1 spot.

Zvonareva must win her last match in the group stage and then make it to the final if she is to have any chance of toppling Wozniacki, who plays Sam Stosur later Wednesday.

After the group stage, the top two players from each group advance to the semifinals.

Zvonareva recovered from 2-0, 4-2 and 5-4 down in the first set, winning the tiebreaker with the help of an ace and several other big serves.

In the second set, she was behind 2-0 and 3-1 before winning 6-4 against a visibly frustrated Azarenka.

Zvonareva said it was ?a good win? especially given she was able to repeatedly come back against a hard-hitting opponent who kept her off balance for much of the night.

?I?m really happy that, you know, I was able to come back in those two sets when I was down,? she said. ?I think I shouldn?t have started that slow, because I gave her an advantage right away. But at the same time, I was just trying to find my rhythm. I was trying to play aggressive. Of course when you?re taking a little bit more risk, those mistakes will come.?

Azarenka, the 10th-ranked player who only got invited to the tournament because of an injury to Serena Williams, chalked up her loss to several missed chances.

?Yes, definitely it was a close match. I had a lot of chances,? he said. ?Very unlucky at some moments ? But, you know, it?s part of the game. You just have to deal with it. I think I played a good match. I?m still in the group. I still have chances to play further.?

The match between two good friends lasted for over two hours and was easily the most entertaining in the tournament so far with several rallies of 10 shots or more.

Azarenka, who was coming off a victory in the Kremlin Cup, started out strongly helped by some superb forehands and erratic play on the part of Zvonareva.

Zvonareva struggled with her serve early on and was hitting too many balls into the net or long, prompting her at one point to kick the ground, mumble and cradle her racket. But Zvonareva got her game going late in the first set, hitting several aces and backhand winners down the line. She leveled at 6-6 and then raced out to a 3-0 lead in the tiebreak and closed out the set with Azarenka netting.

The second set started much the same with Azarenka the aggressor. But up 3-1, she let Zvonareva back in the match with several double faults and shots that sailed long. Helped by a strong backhand and improving serve, Zvonareva took the lead at 5-4 and closed it out when Azarenka hit a shot long.

Behind the Scenes: Team USA in Colombia

Team USA is competing in a place this weekend that hasn?t exactly been known for its safety. But that?s not the reason the team traveled to Bogota, Colombia, with its own private security. When any U.S. team travels abroad, the USTA doesn?t take chances.

?No matter where we go outside the USA, we travel with usually one or two security officers,? says Derek Fisher, the senior manager for USA Team Events. ?Their role is to reach out to the local security and make sure that a plan is in place to ensure the safety of our players and all of our delegation.?

You won?t see Fisher on the court at any Davis Cup matches or practices, but he plays a vital role nonetheless. He?s responsible for the logistics. ?Usually, about three or four months out, I will come to the venue site and visit with my counterpart from the other team,? Fisher says. ?I will also take time to visit all the hotels and see which ones best fit our needs.?

And they have plenty of needs. The U.S. team travels with a big entourage: a trainer, tennis coach, strength and conditioning coach, massage therapist and stringer. ?We don?t want to have to rely on anything from the local market,? Fisher says. ?We even brought our team doctor. With the question of altitude, he consulted with resources in the U.S. to see what was the plan for our guys regarding fluids, and practice schedules.?

Fortunately, none of the players have struggled tremendously with the altitude, making the doctor?s, and Fisher?s, job a little bit easier.

Months ago, when Fisher was planning the team?s trip to Colombia, one member of the current squad probably wasn?t on his mind. Ryan Harrison was just another young up-and-comer on the horizon. But the 18-year-old broke through at the U.S. Open, defeating a Top 20 player in Ivan Ljubicic and playing and impressing in his first five-set match. After that performance, captain Patrick McEnroe?s selection of the young gun as the fourth team member for Davis Cup wasn?t a surprise.

Also not surprising was the fact that he didn?t play in Saturday?s doubles match as previously planned. As many predicted, with the tie tied 1-1 and membership in the World Group on the line, a more experienced player, Mardy Fish, took Harrison?s slot. Fish played alongside John Isner to give the U.S. a 2-1 lead over Colombia. Harrison is still pretty green, after all. He?s fresh-faced, his sandy blond hair is parted neatly in the middle, he looks you in the eye when he speaks, and he even answers questions with ?yes, sir? and ?no, sir.? He?s like the Boy Scout of the American team.

?You know, I would love to get out there and play, but these guys [Inser, Querrey and Fish] have all earned the right to play,? says Harrison, who has been a Davis Cup practice partner before, but who had never been selected as one of the four-man team. ?For now, Mardy and Sam are doing a great job. And today, Mardy and John played well. And we have a 2-1 advantage.?

But that doesn?t mean Harrison is content to sit on the bench. ?If called to compete, I will be ready to play,? says Harrison, whose competitiveness came out in full force at the U.S. Open. ?Representing your country is one of the greatest honors you can have. And hopefully, I will have a long career ahead of me and this will not be my last.?

Kohlschreiber pulls out of Vienna quarter with Melzer

VIENNA (AP)?Defending champion Jurgen Melzer reached the semifinals of the Bank Austria Trophy after Philipp Kohlschreiber pulled out with a strained groin shortly before their quarterfinal Friday.

The top-seeded Melzer, who was 0-3 in career matches against the German, next plays third-seeded Nicolas Almagro. The Spaniard defeated No. 8 Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.

Almagro, who won two clay-court events over the summer, had nine aces and broke Chela four times to advance to his first hard-court semifinal this season.

Andreas Haider-Maurer joined fellow Austrian Melzer in Saturday?s semifinals after upsetting last year?s finalist and second-seeded Marin Cilic of Croatia 7-6 (1), 6-4.

Haider-Maurer will play Michael Berrer of Germany, who beat fourth-seeded Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus 5-7, 6-1, 6-4.

Melzer was disappointed that he didn?t get to face Kohlschreiber.

?It?s a pity, I?d loved to play,? said the French Open semifinalist, who is ranked a career-high 12th. ?I would like to show on court who?s the best.?

Kohlschreiber was injured in a doubles match with fellow German Christopher Kas on Thursday.

?I made a wrong move and unfortunately things got worse overnight,? the seventh-seeded Kohlschreiber said. ?Doctors told me not to play so I had no other choice.?

Haider-Maurer continued his surprising run at the tournament by eliminating the 14th-ranked Cilic.

The 157th-ranked Austrian, who had before never reached the quarterfinals of an ATP event, lost in qualifying but entered the main draw after fifth-seeded Ernests Gulbis pulled out for personal reasons and then defeated both Thomas Muster and Andreas Seppi.

?A dream comes true,? Haider-Maurer said. ?I didn?t believe before the match that I could win it.?

Cilic, who won two ATP events this season, had an early break and was up 4-2 in the opening set, but produced a series of forehand errors as he started to lose control of the game.

Haider-Maurer leveled at 4-4, comfortably won the tiebreaker and managed a decisive break in the opening game of the second set.

Berrer dropped serve at 5-5 in the opening set on the only break point he faced in the entire match against Baghdatis.

The German dominated the second set before Baghdatis got treatment for a right shoulder injury at the start of the decider.

Berrer added another break and closed out the win on his first match point.
