Manchester United Injury News: 5 Players Who Need to Step Up

Despite a torrid start to the season, there's no question that Manchester United is going through a bit of an injury crisis at the moment.

Currently out are: Darron Gibson, Tom Cleverley, Nemanja Vidic, Chris Smalling, Rafael, Jonny Evans, Javier Hernandez and Wayne Rooney.

That's quite a list of starters and valued back-ups in there, and United is without a doubt missing them. But the most alarming absence is that of Wayne Rooney. Without their talisman, United have lost some of their swagger and drive, looking ill at ease and without confidence against teams like Stoke and FC Basel.

And the absences of Vidic, Smalling and Evans were even more keenly felt against Basel midweek, as the United defense looked shambolic all throughout.

Someone needs to step up before United lose any more of their swagger and edge. These are the five players I'm singling out.

Breakaway

From Jay Stone via the Ottawa Citizen:
It?s overtime in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals between the Detroit Red Wings and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Suddenly, Toronto centre Raj Singh steals the puck, stickhandles through the whole team, and beats the sprawling goaltender. The Leafs win.

Yes it?s a dream ? you know that when ?Stanley Cup? and ?Toronto Maple Leafs? appear in the same sentence ? that illuminates the hopes of Raj (Vinay Virmani), an aspiring hockey player who must fight both his traditional family and the free-floating racism of society in order to become (in the movie?s best joke) Mahatma Gretzky.
You can read the rest of Stone?s not-terribly-impressed-with-it movie review here.

Meanwhile, here?s a preview of the film starring Rob Lowe and Vinay Virmani, that was released this past summer:

The Erin Andrews Diet: McDonald's, Chick-fil-a, Arby's, And Chipotle

erin andrews

Erin Andrews did a video interview with Marie Claire and shared 10 things you may not know about the famous and beautiful ESPN anchor.

Including that she has a crush on Ryan Reynolds, has no filter, and can do a great Taylor Swift impression.

But the most surprising detail? Andrews said she eats McDonald's once a week, Arby's once a week, Chick-fil-a once a week, and Chipotle three times a week. We'd like to know her secret of staying super slim.

Arsenal FC: Take a Trip Down Memory Lane with Cesc Fabregas's Goal vs. Tottenham

As the North London Derby approaches, there is no better way to prepare emotionally for a victory over Tottenham than to watch past triumphs over that other North London team.

Back when the Gunners had one of the best midfielders in the world in Cesc Fabregas, moments like this always seemed to be possible. Why not relive those glorious, albeit trophy-less, days?

In the first half of this 2009 encounter at the Emirates, Arsenal were consistently frustrated by a stubborn Spurs side who repeatedly bent but never quite broke and allowed Arsenal to crack open their defence.

However, a great finish from Robin van Persie finally gave Arsenal the breakthrough they so desperately were searching for and injected new life in the side.

Clearly, the injection of energy had quite an effect on Arsenal's young new captain Fabregas, who, immediately after the restart, intercepted a sloppy pass from Wilson Palacios and raced at full speed past three Spurs defenders before stroking a perfect finish past the stunned Heurelho Gomes.

Moments of magic like this are why it was to difficult for Arsenal to let go of their star man and why he is so sorely missed in today's squad.

Nothing better than a trip down memory lane to rekindle the old magic, though, and games like the North London Derby tend to bring out moments like this. Hopefully, someone will step up at White Hart Lane and be our Cesc Fabregas.

But for now, let's just enjoy one of the best goals and one of the best moments from one of the greatest Gunners ever. There's hardly any better way to prepare for a derby.

Bost-Done: The Boston Red Sox and Their Unforgettable Meltdown

I'm giving up on big leads. Seems to be a common trend for Boston sports teams lately.

First the Patriots give up a 21-point lead to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, losing to them for the first time in eight years.

But nothing, absolutely nothing, tops the meltdown by the Boston Red Sox.

Up nine games in the American League wild-card race in early September, the Sox failed miserably in the most important part of their season, losing 20 of their last 27 games. Easily, the worst collapse for a team in September in MLB history.

Up 3-2 against the Orioles in the seventh inning and with the Rays down 0-7 in the eighth, it looked like the Red Sox had somehow held on and could positively go into the playoffs forgetting about their awful September.

Then heartbreak hit the Sox and all of their fans. The "reliable" Jonathan Papelbon struck out two, and gave up back-to-back doubles and a walk-off single that $142 million Carl Crawford failed to catch. Sox choke, 4-3, all hoping for a Rays loss.

What felt like seconds later, the Sox were in their clubhouse when Evan Longoria hit the walk-off home run to give Tampa Bay an 8-7, 12th-inning victory over the Yankees.

For the second consecutive season, the Red Sox have not made the postseason.

Who's to blame?

The guys with the red socks. No one else.

In the month of September, the Red Sox pitching all around was the worst it had been all season. The starting pitchers had a combined 7.08 ERA. John Lackey led the way giving up five or more runs in three of his five starts. Jon Lester and Josh Beckett combined for a 2-9 record, and the bullpen was just as bad. Setup man Daniel Bard had a 10.64 ERA and Papelbon had three blown saves.

But perhaps the worst stat of the Red Sox' unforgettable September? Their .259 winning percentage, their worst since 1964. The team failed to protect their nine-game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays in the wild-card race.

Now as the Red Sox head into the offseason, while the Rays took their postseason spot, the Red Sox have a lot of questions heading into next season.

The Real Reason 'Cuse Fans Should Be Angry About Moving To The ACC

syracuse basketball dome

News that Syracuse University was leaving the Big East for the ACC broke the hearts of Syracuse basketball fans everywhere. There are a lot of basketball traditions and great rivalries in the Big East.

'Cuse fans shouldn't worry about that so much though. Syracuse will play in even better games against ACC teams like Duke every year, and great rivalries will form again.

What Syracuse basketball fans should worry about is this:

"...in the effort to expand Syracuse's branding as New York's college team, Gross said he would be willing to aid in bringing the ACC to New York."

That's what athletic director Daryl Gross told Mike Waters of the Syracuse Post Standard. And what Gross means by that is he's willing to play normal home games in Madison Square Garden or the new Brooklyn Nets stadium, instead of the Carrier Dome.

A basketball game in the Carrier Dome is a great experience, like no other. And while MSG is a bigger venue, nothing quite compares to the Orange playing basketball at home in the Dome.

Jim Boeheim said: "We absolutely would not take conference games to New York City." But Gross still says otherwise.

Boeheim isn't happy about this, and Syracuse basketball fans and players alike shouldn't be either.

Too Many Games For Wisniewski

from Michael Arace of the Columbus Dispatch, The Blue Jackets were put in a bind when their new and expensive defenseman, James Wisniewski, was hog-tied with a suspension that will keep him out of the lineup until late October. It is a critical loss at a crucial time for a reconstituted team. Before delving into that subject, here is one last mulling of the NHL?s ham-fisted ruling.

Wisniewski delivered a blow ? shoulder first, followed by a raised elbow ? to the head of Minnesota?s Cal Clutterbuck after regulation ended in an exhibition game last week. Clutterbuck was seen laughing from the bench as Wisniewski was led to the penalty box.

Three days later, Wisniewski?s two-minute minor for roughing turned into an 11-game suspension ? three exhibitions and eight regular-season games.

Somewhere, Clutterbuck is still laughing.

Here Are All The Athletes Stripping Down For ESPN's The Body Issue This Year

hope solo

What you've been waiting for is almost here. Your favorite professional athletes strip down to barely anything to show off their rock-hard bodies for ESPN The Magazine. And yes, Hope Solo is included.

Solo tweeted she was posing, even though the ESPN staff was trying to keep the models secret (oops). In Solo's defense, she didn't know her modeling was a secret until after the tweet.

Here are some of the athletes that are featured in the 2011 issue along with Solo (from USA Today): Blake Griffin, Jose Reyes, Steven Jackson, Sylvia Fowles, Belen Mozo, Natasha Hastings, Julie Chu, Vera Zvonareva, Steph Gilmore, Suzy Hotrod, Kelly Kulick, Apollo Ohno, Ryan Kesler, Jon Jones, Helio Castroneves, Sergio Martinez, Ryan Hall, and Jeremy Campbell.

There will be four covers, but the editors at ESPN are keeping that a secret until October 7. Any guess on who made the cover?

Marcus Lattimore Is Catching Up In The Heisman Trophy Race

Andrew Luck

We are now four weeks into the college football season, and the race for the Heisman Trophy is starting to take form. The two preseason favorites are still on top, but some lesser known players are starting to make a splash on the national level.

Here are the top five candidates for the Heisman based on a poll of 15 ESPN.com "experts" (first-second-third place votes are in parentheses):

1. Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford (11-2-1): This award would appear to be Luck's to lose. And right now, everybody is looking for a reason to not vote for Luck. But while Luck is quietly wasting away on the west coast and away from the marquee national games, he is still putting up strong numbers for Stanford (3-0).  He is completing 64.5 percent of his passes with eight touchdowns and just one interception. His average game is 19-28 with 262 yards. He has yet to have a monster game, but with Stanford winning their games by 37 points on average, there hasn't been a need.

2. Kellen Moore, QB, Boise State (3-9-1): Moore's average game is 28-35 with 332 yards, as he is completing a whopping 79.3 percent of his passes. He has 12 touchdowns and two interceptions. Boise State is also 3-0, and they look like they should waltz through the rest of their regular season. It may not make the sexiest BCS title game ever, but from a Heisman standpoint, Boise State versus Stanford would be a fun title game matchup. It is just too bad the award will have already been handed out by then.

3. Marcus Lattimore, RB, South Carolina (0-2-7): Lattimore has led the Gamecocks to a 4-0 record and a top-ten ranking by rushing for 611 yards and eight touchdowns. Lattimore's candidacy may depend on USC going undefeated. But even then, he needs more consistency. After rushing for 246 yards against Navy, he totaled only 77 last week versus Vanderbilt.

4. Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor (1-1-2): 13 touchdowns and no interceptions is impressive. But check out his completion totals for each game: 21-27 (vs TCU), 20-22 (vs SFA), 29-33 (vs Rice). He has been nearly perfect completing 85.4 percent of his passes and is averaging 320 yards per game. He has two more cupcakes before facing Texas. But if he can duplicate those numbers against the Longhorns, Griffin could be the darkhorse candidate.

5. Russell Wilson, QB, Wisconsin (0-1-0): Wilson has emerged on the seen with back-to-back 340-yard games and a Wisconsin team with national title hopes. However, those two big games were against Northern Illinois and South Dakota after throwing for just 189 yards against Oregon State. Wilson needs a big game against a big opponent before anybody will take him seriously.

The Swedish Invasion

from John Kreiser of NHL.com, Salming was a trailblazer who probably did more than any other player to dispel the myth that Swedes weren?t tough enough to play in the NHL. He took every hit, dished out more than a few of his own, and became one of the NHL?s top defensemen?and a fan favorite in Toronto.

Salming was a First- or Second-Team All-Star for six consecutive seasons and had 148 goals and 768 points in 16 seasons with the Leafs before finishing with a year in Detroit. In 1996, Salming was the first Swedish player voted into the Hockey Hall of Fame?.

By the early years of the 21st century, no one was better at it than the Red Wings. The sharp eye of European scout Hakan Anderson kept a steady supply of Swedish talent headed to Hockeytown, capped by a Stanley Cup victory in 2008 that saw Lidstrom become the first Swedish captain to lead a team to the title and six fellow Swedes?including Conn Smythe Trophy winner Henrik Zetterberg?get their chance to skate a lap with the Cup.

Some teams have also been lucky.

Goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, who has established himself as one of the NHL?s best, was a seventh-round pick in 2000 who arrived in New York five years later after getting his hockey education with Frolunda?and became an immediate sensation.

Giants vs. Cardinals: TV Schedule, Live Streaming, Radio, Game Time and More

When the New York Giants travel to Glendale to take on the Arizona Cardinals this Sunday, they will look to continue their upward trajectory. The Cardinals are coming off an embarrassing loss to Seattle last weekend, but they play in the NFC West, which means they have a chance to make it to the playoffs with a losing record.

The Giants have had to endure a lot of injuries already this season, particularly on defense, but they knocked around the Eagles last week and are tied for the NFC East lead with a 2-1 record. Eli Manning was fantastic last week and has looked good through three games. He has to be great all season long for this team to have a chance to contend.

The Cardinals are an enigma. They have the talent on offense to at least be fun and competitive against better teams. But Kevin Kolb is still learning how to play quarterback. And defensively, they are still a disaster. They rank 25th in passing yards allowed and 27th in rushing yards allowed.

Where: University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona

When: Sunday, Oct. 2 at 4:05 p.m. EST

Watch: FOX; DirecTV Channel 713

Listen: KTAR 620 AM, Sirius Channel 149 (Arizona); WFAN 660 AM, Sirius Channel 85 (New York)

Live Streaming Audio: NFL.com Audio Pass ($29.99 for year, $27.99 team specific, $9.99 a month)

Betting Line: Giants (-1.5), Over/Under 44.5

The Giants should be favorites in this game considering how well they have played in their last two weeks and how bad the Cardinals have looked in their last two games. I would make them three-point favorites, but I can understand keeping the away team a very slight favorite.

As for the over/under, I will take the under. The Cardinals offense has not taken off like most of us expected. The Giants have the ability to score a lot of points, but I don't think they will go crazy in this game.

What's At Stake?

The Giants are coming off their best victory of the season against Philadelphia. They can't afford to take their foot off the accelerator in this game, or else they risk falling to the back of the pack in the competitive NFC East.

I am convinced the Cardinals could go on a six-game losing streak and still be the favorites to win the NFC West. I would advise against that, but it is entirely possible. Even if they lose this game, they have to show signs of improvement on offense and defense to prove that they are moving in the right direction.

Giants' Injury Report

Defensive ends Osi Umenyiora (knee) and Justin Tuck (neck/groin) are listed as questionable.

Wide receiver Mario Manningham is questionable after missing last week's game with a concussion.

Rookie cornerback Prince Amukamara is doing football activities and is listed as questionable for this game.

Cardinals' Injury Report

Running back Larod Stephens-Howling is questionable with a hand injury.

Tight end Todd Heap (ribs) is probable for this game.

Fantasy Start 'Em: Larry Fitzgerald, WR, Arizona

Despite Kevin Kolb's inconsistencies so far, Larry Fitzgerald is playing like...well, like Larry Fitzgerald. He has 15 catches for 259 yards and two touchdowns through three games, and now he gets to go up against the Giants banged up secondary.

No matter what the team does, Fitzgerald is going to have a monster game. I am not going out on a limb with this pick, but when someone as talented as Fitzgerald has a matchup this good, there's no need to go out on a limb.

Fantasy Sit 'Em: Victor Cruz, WR, New York Giants

Victor Cruz emerged as a fantasy waiver wire darling last weekend with a huge game against Philadelphia. Don't be fooled, people; it's not going to last. The Eagles had several mental lapses in that game that allowed him to get loose and look a lot better than he actually is.

Cruz might get a few catches in this game, but he is not going to average 35 yards per catch or score two touchdowns this week.

Fantasy Sleeper: Brandon Jacobs, RB, New York Giants

Brandon Jacobs only has 29 carries for less than 100 yards on the season, but the Cardinals' run defense is terrible, so I expect both parts of Thunder and Lightning to get a lot of carries this week.

Even if Jacobs doesn't get the yardage that you want from a starting running back, he will get a touchdown or two.

What They Are Saying

Giants defensive end Justin Tuck believes that the victory over the Eagles last weekend will be the start of good things to come for this team this season.

You're human. You think about the injuries. You see 11 guys in the huddle. You believe in those 11 guys, (but) you know sometimes that talent isn't there. For me, personally, (the win) really helped me believe even more in this football team. I do believe in them, and I did before we won. But now, there's no doubt whatsoever. We can beat anybody.

Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt did not have a lot of positives to take away from last week's loss to Seattle, but he did like what he saw from the defense.

Our defense played well, and I still think we're motivated to improve. But as far as being around the ball, putting pressure (on the quarterback) and making some plays, it was a noticeable improvement from our defense.

Giants' Player To Watch: Eli Manning, QB

This team is going to go as far as Eli Manning is going to take them. Last season, he struggled down the stretch and the team missed out on the playoffs.

Manning has played well this season, and the Giants are winning. He should have a big game against a bad Cardinals defense this Sunday. His confidence will continue to grow, and the offense will be better because of it.

Cardinals’ Player To Watch: Kevin Kolb, QB

Not to be obvious by picking both quarterbacks, but they do affect the game more than any other position. Kevin Kolb is still going through some growing pains as he learns to play quarterback in the NFL and in a new system.

Last week, Kolb had to deal with pressure, and he did not respond well. Now he has to go up against a Giants defensive line that is known for its ability to get after the quarterback.

He has to make adjustments and prove that he is capable of checking down when his first or second options aren’t open.

Matchup To Watch: Giants Defensive Line vs. Cardinals Offensive Line

In keeping with the theme that Kevin Kolb has to make adjustments when his first and second options aren’t available, his offensive line has to give him the time to be able to go through his reads so he can determine where he wants to go with the ball.

With Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora battling injuries, perhaps things won’t be so bad for Kolb. Then again, if the Seahawks were able to get pressure on him, Umenyiora and Tuck at 75 percent should have no problems.

Prediction

The Giants have all the momentum in this game, and the Cardinals are still trying to figure out what kind of team they are going to be this season.

Giants 27, Cardinals 17

Arsenal vs. Olympiakos: Gunners' Victory Highlights Holes in Arsenal Defense

You knew it would happen. In a season of tremendous tumult, Arsenal just couldn't land good news without some bad following closely behind.

On Wednesday, Arsenal took on Greek side Olympiakos in Champions League group play. I was of the mind that this was an assured three points for the Gunners.

I understood the Gunners had some injuries along the back line, but Olympiakos hardly put a scare into me with their attack. After the 2-1 victory by Arsenal, I have rethought my previously opinion.

Arsene Wenger's boys were saved by a spirited attack and the foot of one of his prized young summer signings.

If we ever questioned where Wenger was spending his money in the offseason, it should come to a close after a couple of his summer acquisitions rocketed home the essential goals of the game. Both Axel Oxlade-Chamberlain and Andre Santos scored.

However, Olympiakos breached the back line far too many times to feel safe in this result. The real star of the show was goal keeper Wojciech Szczesny, who was called upon to go above and beyond in Wednesday's match at Emirates.

The Gunners were without Gervinho, Theo Walcott, Jack Wilshere and Laurent Koscielny due to injuries. Defender Koscielny could have been used from a depth standpoint as Wenger started Alex Song as a central defender alongside Per Mertesacker.

A team without a great deal of firepower was made to look like an top-shelf attacking club as they allowed far too many shots for such a side, then left David Fuster unmarked after a corner was won.

That lack of attention allowed Fuster to head home Olympiakos' only goal. While Arsenal took the full three points, they left with a great deal of questions as well.

The Gunners are on a continuous mission to reassert themselves on the world stage. There is no way to do that with a defense like the one they showed on Wednesday.

Week 4 Fantasy Football Projections: Chris Johnson and 3 Studs That Will Bounce Back

It's been a very rough year for Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson, but he's not the only "fantasy stud" that has been more like a fantasy dud.

There is just something in the air this year I guess. For some reason players that were always sure-bets to be awesome fantasy producers have really failed, and sleepers that absolutely nobody saw coming have been all over the boards.

I have to believe in my heart-of-hearts that some of our usual fantasy stud players will eventually right the ship and ascend to the top of the fantasy point charts again.

It's just unfathomable to believe that they are going to struggle for all of 2011.

Eventually the odds will even out and things will seem a little bit more normal, and I think Week 4 may be the breakthrough.

Here are three fantasy studs that are going to bounce back:

Chris Johnson, RB Titans:

The Browns are giving up 128.7 rushing yards a game, which leads me to believe that this week will be the straw that breaks the camels back for Chris Johnson. He's just far too good to be held down for four weeks in a row. Considering the Browns weak run defense, I think this will be his breakout week.

Jay Cutler, QB Bears:

Cutler didn't have a good game at all against a strong Packers defense, so naturally he is going to have a great game against the Panthers. Cutler is notorious for being up and down, but the Panthers defense is known for giving up points. Offensively they should put up numbers, which means Cutler and the Bears are going to have to air it out as well.

Frank Gore, RB 49ers:

Gore has been pretty disappointing so far, so a big game against a banged up Eagles team. We all understand the Eagles offensive woes right now with Vick, but defensively they aren't as lock-down as we expected. They have a hard time stopping the run, and they are missing a ton of tackles. I expect Gore will look good against Philadelphia.

Hope Solo's Father Was Publicly Cleared Of Murder Charges

hope solo

Hope Solo's father left her family when she was very young. He was homeless, and lived a challenging life.

And in January of 2001, he was a "person of interest" in the murder of a realtor Mike Emert who was stabbed to death, according to King5.com

Hope's father, Jeffrey Solo, was homeless at the time of the murder, and he fought back on the accusations:

"I've been in the street for five years. I've been mean. But I did not kill this guy. I didn't even know who he was," he said.

Hope and her father reconnected when Hope when to the University of Washington, and became close.

When Jeffrey Solo died four years ago, Hope made it her mission to clear his name. And now, although the Mike Emert murder is still an open case, sheriffs say Jeffrey Solo is cleared as a suspect.

Hope says she can let go of pent up anger because she knows her dad is now free.

Here's a video of Hope talking about the situation:

RICHES TO RAGS: Professional Athletes Who Went Flat Broke

chris mcalister

Bad business investments. Drugs. Hookers. Divorce and child support. You name it, athletes have lost money because of it.

Chris McAlister recently petitioned the courts to lower his child support payments, claiming he's so broke he lives with his parents — despite signing a $55 million contract in 2004.

But McAlister is not alone, many other athletes have gone from millionaires to flat broke.

Dick "Night Train" Lane turned to drugs and lost about $5 million

Hall of Famer Dick "Night Train" Lane set quite a few records during his career, including one he still holds for most interceptions in a season.

Those records didn't help him retain his fortune however. He lost about $5 million when he became involved with drugs and alcohol and made some bad investments in real estate, the music industry and oversea scams. Lane eventually lost it all and spent the last years of his life in an assisted living facility.

Marion Jones lost about $7 million after secretly using steroids

The former holder of the "fastest woman in the world," lost her title, and her medals, when the world found out she used performance-enhancing drugs. Steroid use, combined with multiple run-ins with the government, including committing perjury to the IRS, cost Marion Jones about $7 million.

In attempt to revive her athletic career, Jones joined the WNBA in 2010, playing with the Tulsa Shock.

Rollie Fingers thought a pistachio farm would be a good idea and lost about $8 million.

The baseball star with the famous handlebar moustache was in 1992 the only second relief pitcher to be elected into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

He retired in 1985, after both Oakland and Milwaukee retired his jersey, and invested in pistachio farms, Arabian horses and wind turbines. In 1992, Fingers filed for bankruptcy. He paid his more-than-$4 million-debt by selling baseball cards and working and was eventually cleared in 2007 by the IRS. He still lost about $8 million though.
