Coming off a largely inconclusive performance in the Seahawks' preseason opener against the Chargers, Tarvaris Jackson will have to do a lot more to impress in the second preseason game, this time against the Minnesota Vikings.
Given that coming into this season, he had done little to prove that he was a starting quarterback in the league, the preseason is of the utmost importance for him. It will give the Seahawks coaches their only chance to see him in their uniform against live competition before the games really count.
The uneven performance in the preseason opener probably had a lot to do with head coach Pete Carroll's usage of his quarterback. He only had Jackson in the game for five pass attempts.
The bigger problem for Jackson, though, was the performance of his backups, Charlie Whitehurst and Josh Portis. Whitehurst completed 14 of his 20 passes for 115 yards. Portis completed six of nine passes for 69 yards and a touchdown. Only Whitehurst is really competing with Jackson for starting snaps, but having not one, but two quarterbacks playing well behind him can't help inspire confidence in him.
The Vikings will give Jackson a decent defense to prove his worth against. Last season, Minnesota was the 18th ranked scoring defense in the league. They bring a heavy pass rush, but their secondary can be picked apart.
Expect Jackson's role to increase against Minnesota to the point where he might play for most of the first half.
He very well might need the time. Whitehurst is playing well behind him and while Pete Carroll has publicly supported Jackson as the starter, his confidence may start to shift with another game like last Thursdays'.
