Week 1 in the NFL is in the books, giving us a prime opportunity to overrate, exaggerate and overvalue. The NFL season is sure to offer some surprises, but I am confident these next few teams are exactly what we think they are.
Any discerning football fan will realize that some teams just can't escape midseason doldrums. However, the very nature of power rankings is to take the temperature of the landscape as it sits right now.
After the first week, I was so blown away by five teams, that I can't fathom them faltering. Here are your sure-fire top ten teams for the rest of the season.
1. Green Bay Packers: I always wondered if the Packers merely got hot at the end of 2010, or if they finally figured out who they were as a team, and clicked.
Thursday proved it was the latter. This team is an unrelenting machine on both sides of the ball. Another Super Bowl is not out of the question.
2. Philadelphia Eagles: Sure, the Rams started dropping like flies, but LeSean McCoy and Michael Vick looked to be in a different class on the field.
This team will put numbers on the board all season long.
3. New Orleans Saints: I understand they lost their opener, but this team was done no favors in playing the best team in the league.
Drew Brees was on fire, and the Saints got their grit back after a humbling playoff flame-out. The Saints will get a bunch of wins in their column shortly, don't worry about that.
4. Baltimore Ravens: I will go ahead and eat some of the crow that half of you are having. The Ravens looked Steelers-esque on Sunday.
They dominated the game the Steelers way, with hard hits and shutdown defense. They also managed to get some marvelous offense together against a seemingly stout side. The Ravens will be scary good this season. Fans, my first flip-flop of the year. Yay!
5. Chicago Bears: We sleep on them every year. Well, I am not going to be fooled in 2011. This team will once again be undervalued, and still manage to make it deep into the postseason.
Their defense is just as stout as we last remembered, and their running game is pristine. Now if we could just get Jay Cutler to smile a little more.
