Buffalo Bills running back Fred Jackson enters Week 3 as the league-leading rusher and he will exit remaining at the top.
Through two games, Jackson has rushed for 229 yards and two touchdowns in 35 attempts. He has also been extremely successful against the New England Patriots, despite the Bills not beating the team in 15 games.
The Bills offense has been surging so far this season and has led the team to a 2-0 start. While the passing game behind quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has been getting the most attention as of late, the running game has been extremely effective.
Last week against the Oakland Raiders, the Bills chose to run even when from behind. This speaks volumes about Jackson's skill and efficacy and the Bills' confidence in him.
Today against the Patriots, the Bills will likely rely on Jackson's legs to keep them in the game, even if they do find themselves in a hole against Tom Brady and the Patriots.
It seems probable that Jackson can rush for his season-average 114.5 yards against New England this afternoon.
In seven games against the team, he has rushed for a total of 391 yards. In contrast, he's had 186 total yards against the New York Jets in the same number of games. It's apparent that Jackson has found the formula for success against the Patriots, even when his team doesn't pull out the win.
Considering also that the 2011 Bills are a far superior squad to any they've fielded in recent seasons, there's an excellent chance that Jackson could have his best performance of the season so far against the venerable Patriots.
