Forget traditions and rivalries, college football is now 100% about money and there really is no denying it after Texas A&M’s move to the SEC. Their rivalry with Texas has been all but cancelled and this is just one of many dominoes to fall in conference realignment.
Nebraska and Oklahoma are done playing after they left for the Big Ten, the Big East has all but collapsed and we are creeping closer to superconferences.
College football has gone through serious realignment before and the sport has stayed strong but the motivation behind the latest set of moves seems greedy at worst.
It is important to remember that the Aggies are just looking out for their own self-interests and that they are far from the only school to put money over the sport. It is just incredibly frustrating and disheartening for the average fan who wants to see the great rivalries continue.
College football will be here for a long, long time but we likely won’t recognize many of the biggest rivalries or the conferences when this is all said and done. The sport needs to get back to its roots and soon before a lot of the magic that makes college football special will be gone.
