Todd McShay 2011 NFL Mock Draft Says Temple DT Muhammad Wilkerson Is Good Fit for San Diego Chargers in NFL Draft

The best team in the league last season from statistical standpoint has some work to do this offseason.

Free agency could be an issue for them and they have to find a way to start keeping their own players home but now is time for them to add some starting-caliber talent in the draft.

Defensively they have needs in the defensive front seven, most notably at outside linebacker and defensive end.

On offense they have needs at tackle and wide receiver, but I think their best bet would be to wait to wait on those picks.

McShay's Pick: Muhammad Willkerson, DT, Temple

Scenario 1: Wilkerson has good upside as a 3-4 end with his ability to occupy space and provide some production as a pass-rusher. 

Scenario 2: There is a lot of talk about whether the Chargers would like to trade back or up from this spot, and if they move up it will likely be to target a pass-rusher like Quinn or another 5-technique like Watt or Jordan.

Scenario 3: Carimi would fill a top need and could be plugged in as a solid starter for the next decade.

Given this scenario I cannot argue with McShay's pick too much.

Wilkerson is a talented youngster with a ton of upside on the defensive line.

He was great force at a lower level of competition and his draft stock has risen because he has the potential to be great disruptive force in both the run and pass game.

On ESPN's SportsCenter today he prided himself on being a run-stopper, but he also had 17 sacks during his three-year career as an Owl.

As 3-4 defensive ends go, he could be one of the elite in the league if he continues to develop as a player.

Again, Watt and Jordan could fit but both of them are not available.

Carimi could be considered, but I think the Chargers would likely address offensive tackle in a later on.
