Robert "The Nordic Nightmare" Helenius (15-0, 10 KO) picked up the biggest win of his career after knocking out former WBC heavyweight champion Samuel Peter (34-5) in the ninth round of their scheduled 12-rounder for the WBO Inter-Continental heavyweight title.
The 27-year-old from Finland took his time in the early rounds, while Peter measured him with the jab and tried to force him to fight toe-to-toe. Helenius kept his composure and held when necessary.
Helenius picked it up in the middle rounds and started to land straight-lefts on Peter, 30, before the start of the ninth round. A left hook in round nine put the Nigerian down for one of the few times in his career. Peter was able to beat the 10-count, but was immediately knocked out cold after Helenius landed another left hook.
Helenius easily becomes a contender with the victory over one of the few notable fighters left in the division. He is on the fast track to the biggest fights in the division. He is currently unranked in the top 10 according to Ring Magazine, but this win should be more than enough to get him a spot with the top guys including Vitali Klitschko, Wladimir Klitschko, David Haye and Tomasz Adamek.
Peter now drops two back-to-back defeats by knockout. The other was a September loss to IBF and WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (55-3).
