Tim Tebow's Future In Denver Remains Uncertain
Denver Broncos new Executive Vice President knows something about drafting star college quarterback and trading those star quarterbacks before they have a chance to make their mark.
Back in 1983, Elway was the first overall pick by the Baltimore Colts, but he famously forced a trade and landed in Denver, where he became an icon and eventually a Super Bowl champion.
Three decades later, he may engineer a similar controversial quarterback move.
Last week, ESPN's John Clayton wrote that there is strong chance the Broncos will select a quarterback in the second round.
I'm starting to think Elway might take a QB in the second round and call the Tebow selection a mistake. That interest creates tantalizing possibilities on draft day and thereafter. Thinking that Cam Newton can go No. 1 to Carolina, the Broncos could entice a team such as Tennessee to trade up to the No. 2 spot to get Blaine Gabbert. The Broncos could then take a quarterback in the second round and eventually trade Orton for a second-round pick in 2012.
Assuming they take someone like Ryan Mallett or Andy Dalton at the beginning of the second round, trading Orton off and keeping Tebow can only lead to problems. Not because Tebow doesn't have pro potential--I think he does--but keeping two very young quarterbacks with big profiles is problematic.

Whichever one earns the starter's job will continuously look over his shoulder at the other. And the moment he struggles, fans and the press will clamor for the other to play.
That's not how you rebuild a once proud franchise.
Keeping Orton and dealing Tebow makes a ton more sense....again, assuming they draft a quarterback this year.
