Even though Jim Harbaugh fled to the NFL, Stanford still came into the 2011 season with mighty high expectations once future No. 1 pick QB Andrew Luck announced he was returning to school.
The Cardinal came into the season with a ton of momentum following a 12-1 campaign and a win in the Orange Bowl last season.
Luck has been the most publicized college football player in the country since the spring and some of that hype has rubbed off to his team.
After starting off the season 4-0, Stanford is now ranked No. 4 in the Coaches’ Poll and No. 7 in the AP Poll.
You have to wonder, though, if those rankings are truly deserved.
So far, the Cardinal have beat up on weak competition and they only have one ranked team left on their schedule, and that’s No. 9 Oregon.
Do Luck and the rest of his Cardinal crew really have what it takes to topple the Ducks and go undefeated?
Given their schedule, would it really even be that impressive.
New head coach David Shaw is going to play a big role in this team’s ultimate success.
Shaw is continually learning what his team’s strengths and weaknesses are and if he can figure them all out by the time November rolls around, his Stanford team has a chance to rise to the top of the Pac-12.
Still, the Cardinal have a lot more to prove than just beating the Arizona’s and UCLA’s of the world.
