College Football Picks Against the Spread: Miami vs. Virginia Tech

Line: Virginia Tech (-7.5)

Miami and Virginia Tech have been bitter rivals for as long as the teams have been in the Big East. These games are closely fought and tough and this year should be no different.

The Hurricanes will finally get their preseason All-ACC safety Ray Ray Armstrong back and that should make an already good defense even better.

This could be disastrous for the Hokies who have had serious problems turning drives into points. They are 98th in the country in red zone offense and outside of a 66-13 thumping of Appalachian State have not scored more than 30 points in a game including just three points last week against Clemson.

But their defense has been lights out. They held Clemson to season lows in every major offensive category and are giving up less than 250 yards per game including just 58 on the ground.

Jacory Harris is still an interception machine though he may have improved slightly from last year because he has already thrown for six touchdowns. Running back Lamar Miller ran over Virginia Tech last season but this is a different defense so it would take a superhuman effort in order to get 163 yards again.

Undoubtedly this game will be a defensive struggle—the over/under on it is 44.5—but the advantage should be with the Hokies assuming they can get their heads off of last week’s loss to Clemson. But covering by 7.5 will be too much for a team that can’t put up many points.

Pick: Miami (+7.5)
