Will Ricky Rubio Lead the Most Fast Paced Offense in NBA Next Season?
Ricky Rubio will be joining the Minnesota Timberwolves for what will hopefully be the 2011-2012 NBA season barring a lockout. He is expected to rejuvenate a club that won only 17 games last season and lead them at the point guard position. The 20-year-old prodigy will be asked to shoulder a heavy load and orchestrate a dynamic offense.
The Timberwolves played at the fastest pace in the league last year and Minnesota GM says he only expects the team to go faster with the addition of a legitimate point guard. The TWolves roster is stacked with athletic young talent such as Michael Beasley, Wes Johnson, and Anthony Randolph but lacked a point guard who could efficiently find them in transition last year.
The Timberwolves also hold the number 2 pick in next weeks draft and will either select athletic forward Derrick Williams or move it for a veteran to help push the team into playoff contention. By inking Rubio to a deal earlier this month, Kahn will be able to get free agents and potential trade acquirements to buy into their system and have a true point guard of the future leading the way.
If Rubio is as gifted of a passer and floor leader as he is hyped up to be, players would begin to take interest in joining the Minnesota Timberwolves, much in the same way that the Suns were able to use Steve Nash to recruit players for their run and gun offense. The only deterring factor could be the Minnesota weather, which certainly is different than Phoenix.
Next season will be a trial run for the Timberwolves and their new point guard, but look for it to be a great future landing spot for athletic free agents who want to use their talents in a system that benefits them.
