Arsenal FC: Should Wenger Take Roma Striker Mirko Vucinic as Part of Clichy Deal

Gael Clichy has been linked with a move away from Arsenal ever since it was reported that he had refused to sign a contract extension.

Liverpool had tested the water with a derisory bid of £5 million but Arsenal rejected that outright.

Now it looks like Italian side AS Roma is ready to swoop for Clichy. Unlike Liverpool, Roma have reportedly shown real class by willing to meet or at least pay close to what Arsenal would expect for the French left back.

Another interesting rumour making the round is Roma have offered the Montenegro international Mirko Vucinic to Arsenal in exchange for Clichy.

While Clichy is valued close to £8 million because of his contractual situation, Vucinic is quoted at £18 million.

So, how is a straightforward swap going to make sense?

Clearly Roma have overpriced Vucinic and not many clubs seem to be interested in him. So, the clubs looking for bargain buys may try to get him for a cut price which would lead to tediously protracted negotiations.

As Roma apparently want to get rid of Vucinic, one would expect them to sell him at the earliest.

On the other hand, Clichy is worth at least £15 million in open market, so Roma might be willing to do a straight swap considering their own needs.

Roma's current owners are ambitious and rich, so they might be willing to sell or exchange the players they think Roma should no longer keep hold of for the players on top of their wish list.

If Arsene Wenger is interested and Clichy is willing to move to Stadio Olimpico, this deal might go through.

That would help Clichy more than anyone else as Serie A is not as direct as the Premier League and teams not often resort to high balls which should suit Clichy.

As for Arsenal, Vucinic is a good striker and would offer a sturdier presence up front.

He's very strong and is suited to the Premier League. Vucinic wins quite a lot of aerial battles, an area where Arsenal have lacked in recent years.

Also a good dribbler, Vucinic has pace to threaten defenders and would be a good back up for Robin van Persie or the two could forge a partnership as Arsenal's prime attacking force.

Certainly an improvement on Marouane Chamakh, Vucinic is also versatile who has played a lot of games on the left flank for Roma, so could fit into Arsenal's lone-striker formation effortlessly.

At 27, Vucinic is at the of peak of his career which would appease the fans craving for experience.

On paper, a direct swap seems a brilliant transfer for Arsenal, but not so much for Roma. How many of you think so?
