For the first time in what feels like forever, the Pittsburgh Pirates are in contention for a division title. They are in third place in the National League Central but just one game out of first place.
The Pirates have a chance to be buyers at the trade deadline for once. Normally Pittsburgh is sending starters to contenders in exchange for young prospects, but now they're looking to bring in starters. So will they make a huge deal before the trade deadline?
Now that the Pirates have a shot to make it to the playoffs, they need to do what it takes to become a better team. It will be difficult for them to compete with the St. Louis Cardinals, Milwaukee Brewers and the Cincinnati Reds for the second half of the season.
Making a big trade could push the Pirates to the top of the division. General Manager Neal Huntington told Bill Brink of the Post-Gazette that they're looking to bring in hitters.
In theory we would absolutely like to add to this club. We work every day to try to see if there is the right piece to add to the club. We are to a point where we've got some prospects in the system that we're willing to talk about.
The conversations are ongoing. The market is beginning to clarify a little bit but there's still more buyers than there are sellers.
With both Ryan Doumit and Chris Snyder on the disabled list, the Pirates may look to make a deal for Geovany Soto of the Chicago Cubs. There's no guarantee Soto is up for grabs, but because he hans't been productive for a while and is set to make bank after this season, the Cubs may deal him.
Another guy the Pirates will look into trading for is Hunter Pence. The Astros are still debating whether or not to move him, but if the right offer comes along then Pence will find a new home.
The Pirates would be wise to do whatever it takes to bring in a hitter. Their offense just isn't good enough to hang with the Cardinals, Brewers or Reds. They have to buyers this year, and make sure they trade for some power.
