MLB Trade Rumors: Kerry Wood Will Remain With Chicago Cub?s at Trade Deadline

It?s honestly somewhat of a strange concept still considering Chicago?s Kerry Wood a valuable trading piece, let alone a legitimate factor in the MLB.

The truth of the matter is that Wood can be a valuable member of a bullpen though, and now that he is about to come off the disabled list teams are going to start asking about acquiring his services from the Cubs.

Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun Times reports that Wood feels a trade is highly unlikely:

Wood, who is expected to draw more attention than any other Cub from contenders looking for help at the deadline, has a full no-trade clause. Signed to an under-market, one-year, $1.5 million deal, Wood says he might be willing to waive the no-trade for an ??ideal?? scenario but doesn?t think he?s going anywhere.

??I know the [trade] talks are going to come,?? the right-hander said. ??I?ve already been hearing it. So we can address it now. I doubt it. We?re committed here. We?ve got a [charity bowling] event in September. I don?t see it happening.??

Given the relationship between Wood and the Cubs/Hendry, even an unlikely trade would probably amount to little more than a two-month hiatus from the North Side.

??Obviously, Sarah and I will talk about it, and we have a little bit,?? he said of his wife, who?s from the area. ??But it would have to be ideal for both, something that is definitely going to help the organization down the road and something that?s going to fit for us, which right now is here. So it would be tough.??

Wood is apparently extremely happy and comfortable where he is in Chicago, and anything like wins and losses doesn?t seem to be a contributing factor right now with him.

That being said, he is still going to be highly requested as the next week rolls around, and it is interesting to note that he didn?t completely shut down the idea of a trade. He just didn?t seem too keen on moving around.

ESPN?s Buster Olney expands more on the Cubs trade deadline situation:

A team open for business, according to rival evaluators. While there are not teams banging on the door for the likes of Carlos Zambrano and Alfonso Soriano -- two average players making superstar money -- Jeff Baker and Kerry Wood are among the most coveted players in the trade market. Both are cheap (Baker is making $1.175 million and Wood $1.5 million), and both present useful skills (Baker can play multiple positions and kills left-handed pitching, and Wood misses bats and has experience). Wood would have to approve any trade. Executives with other teams view Carlos Pena as interesting because of his power, defense and leadership, but very risky because of the streaky nature of his production.

The Cubs are 14 games under .500 and any hope for making a comeback seem to be long swept under the rug, so it would make sense for them to be selling at the deadline, but Olney seems to feel that Chicago won?t be sending many players away.
