Kobe Bryant is turning to medical experiments to give his aging knees some life.
The Lakers star went to Germany last month to get platelet-rich plasma therapy, reports the LA Times.
ESPN says the procedure consists of “centrifuging the patient’s blood to isolate platelets and growth factors. The mix is then injected into the injured area to accelerate healing. The concentrated growth factors have been shown to speed tissue growth and healing in surgically created lesions in lab animals.”
That’s some confusing medical jargon, but it sounds like it helps your joints and muscles heal faster, which is what HGH and steroids do too.
Nonetheless many athletes, including Tiger Woods, Rafael Nadal and Phillies pitcher Cliff Lee have undergone the therapy.
It will remain to be seen whether this procedure is considered “fair” or “cheating”.
The World Anti-Doping Agency debated outlawing the procedure in recent years, but determined that it was okay as long as there is no HGH in the injections.
But Stanford University Medical Center surgery Allan Mishra told the LA Times, “Right now, the data is immature.” So it will likely be awhile until we are fully aware of what this therapy does.
In the meantime, aging athletes like Kobe will take all the experimental science they can get.
