Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz looks like a genius after picking Robinson Cano and Adrian Gonzalez in the 2011 MLB Home Run Derby.
It looks like Big Papi knew what he was doing after all. The captain of the 2011 American League Home Run Derby team, Ortiz was responsible for picking three players to join him.
His first choice was an absolute no-brainer. Toronto Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista leads the majors in homers a year after winning the home run title. He is currently the premier masher in the game.
Yet he only knocked four out of Chase Field on Monday and was one of the big disappointments of the night.
It was the other two picks that made Ortiz look brilliant.
Adrian Gonzalez is a teammate of Big Papi and some questioned if that was the only reason he got the invite. The questions were put to bed right off the bat as Gonzo clubbed eight bombs as the first hitter in the contest. The incredible performance stretched through-out the night and he finished with a whopping 31 total home runs.
He sprayed the ball to all sides of the field and would have won the contest in almost any other year.
But not in 2011.
Robinson Cano had 15 homers in the first half but was looking up at almost 20 players in the overall HR standings.
But he came out with his dad throwing the pitches and launched an eye-popping 32 home runs?good enough to capture the 2011 title.
He was knocking the cover off the ball and set a record with 12 home runs in the final round. He did it with four outs still at his disposal.
It was a great power display among two players that weren't the favorites by any stretch. But it doesn't matter...in Big Papi we trust.
