2011 MLB Futures Game: Bryce Harper Overthrow Leads to Wold Team Taking the Lead

Bryce Harper is Struggling in the 2011 MLB Futures Game

The US got out to an early 3-0 lead over the world, but the world has come storming back. After six innings they now lead 4-3.

With the U.S. up 3-2 the world team had a runner on first. The batter drove a single into the corner of left field. Bryce Harper ran down the ball and came up firing at the base of the left field wall.

Harper displayed his arm rifle, as the ball made it to the catcher on a line in the air, but it was up the line towards first base. The throw probably wouldn't have got the runner even if it had been on target.

And while it was an impressive display of arm strength it was an ill-advised throw. By over throwing the cutoff man, Harper allowed the runner to advance from second to third. The next batter then drove in the runner to give the world a 3-2 lead.

The fact that he tried to throw the runner out at home should surprise no one. Harper likes to show off. This much became wildly apparent in batting practice.

Harper typically likes to spend his first round of batting practice spraying balls to the opposite field. But apparently he is willing to snap out of his routine for events where people like to see a show.

Harper stepped right in and started swinging for the fences. I'll let Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post describe his performance. Kilgore:

The longest of his homers went over the roughly 20-foot high fence in right-center field, above a sign reading 413 feet. A conservative estimate would put the homer at about 430 feet.

So far, Harper is 0-for-2 on the day with a strikeout and a ground out.
