Five out of the last six WrestleManias have ended with John Cena winning or retaining the WWE Championship. It’s safe to say that the WWE Universe would like to see something different.
It’s also safe to say that the WWE could take a step in the right direction by having The Miz be victorious over Cena at WrestleMania and become the new official face of the WWE.
Having The Miz beat Cena and retain the WWE Championship would be the turning point that WWE needs to get out of the Cena era. If Cena were to win this match, not only would it be extremely repetitive, but it would be horribly detrimental to the career of The Miz and the other WWE Superstars trying to make it to the top.
If The Miz loses this match, it’s likely that he will become just a regular main-eventer at best. His career will never reach maximum potential unless he beats John Cena at WrestleMania.
However, there is one outcome where The Miz doesn’t win the match and also his career doesn’t have to suffer: John Cena turns heel.
A lot of people might think that The Rock might be a key player in a possible Cena heel turn at this year’s WrestleMania. I could see that happening, but I don’t think The Rock has to be a part of the heel turn.
The heel turn is beneficial primarily because it’s something different. Not only is it something different, but it’s the next best thing that will get us out of the Cena era.
The best scenario to get out of the Cena era would be of course to have him lose to The Miz at WrestleMania and finally pass the torch. I don’t see that happening because of Cena’s track record at WrestleMania and Vince McMahon’s love for his money-maker.
If they’re not going to have him lose, I would like them to resort to Plan B and have him turn heel.
This is the part where the WWE Universe says: “They can’t turn the face of the company into a heel.” Yes, they can. They’ve done it before.
Go back to WrestleMania X-Seven. The biggest face in pro wrestling history, Stone Cold Steve Austin, made his heel turn in his match against The Rock at WrestleMania in 2001. Austin won the match, but The Rock didn’t go anywhere.
If Cena were to win this match by turning heel, The Miz would have the same fate as The Rock. And after the year 2001, Steve Austin never held or competed for a title.
If Cena were to win this match cleanly and walk away WWE Champion again at WrestleMania, the most important aspect would be how it would affect The Miz. If Cena’s turn were to take place, The Miz would have to make a face turn in the process.
It would be awkward at first, but it can be done. Cena winning this match at all would still impact The Miz’s career in a bad way, but he gets a second chance if a heel turn were to happen. If he loses cleanly to Cena, the value of his career diminishes and can never be fixed again.
A Cena heel turn isn’t needed at this particular point just to have something different. If Cena were to win this match, he would have to turn heel in order to save the career of The Miz and every other WWE Superstar.
