Former UFC fighter and current Strikeforce welterweight contender Paul Daley was not happy when he learned that the UFC had purchased Strikeforce. Upon hearing the news he actually served notice that he was considering pulling out of his fight with Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz. In the end, cooler heads prevailed and Daley put pen to paper, signing the contract to fight Diaz on April 9.
MMAFighting confirmed that the contract had been signed with Diaz's manager, Cesar Gracie.
When Daley learned that Strikeforce had been purchased by the UFC, he took to twitter, posting, "Business as usual, what if i dont wanna fight for DANA WHITE/ZUFFA?......Dana white bans me for life from the UFC, Then buys STRIKEFORCE, and thinks im still gonna be EASY and fight on one of the most anticipated fights of the year (vs Diaz)? Which will no doubt make ZUFFA/Dana White money."
The ban for life that Daley references was issued by UFC president Dana White following UFC 113. A frustrated Daley sucker punched Josh Koscheck after their fight was over, causing White to offer the following in the post fight press conference, "He's done, I don't give a s**t if he's the best 170 pounder in the world, he'll never come back here. He will never fight in the UFC ever again."
Following the ban from the UFC, Daley fought on cards for Impact FC and Shark Fights before signing with Strikeforce.
In his Strikeforce debut Daley knocked out Scott Smith in the first round of their fight. He was later awarded the "Strikeforce Best of 2010 Awards: Knockout of the Year" for his performance.
Ariel Helwani from MMAFighting spoke to White following UFC 128, asking him about Daley's status, "Paul Daley has a contract," White said. "It would be a good idea if he did (fight Diaz)"
