Sparks fly in Washington as the Wizards point guard John Wall throws a punch after catching an elbow from Heat center Zydrunas Ilgauskas in a 123-107 Miami victory on Wednesday night.
Check out the video at the 1:10 mark to catch the slow-motion replay.
In the second quarter of a one-point game, the 7'3" Ilgauskas had a mismatch on the 6'4" Wall at the top of the arc. The pesky Wall was taking multiple swipes at the ball and Ilgauskas decided to back him up with a elbow to the mouth.
Wall continued his aggressive D before a second Big Z elbow sent Wall over the edge.
An outraged Wall quickly strikes back with a punch straight to the ribs of Ilgauskas. The two get into a pushing match before cooler heads prevail.
Both players were ejected.
At the end of the video you can see JaVale McGee and Juwan Howard get into it a bit—but it's really nothing more than some pushing and shoving.
The frustrations of a season's worth of tough losses and missed expectations finally caught up to the first pick in the 2010 NBA Draft.
John Wall has done well individually this season, scoring 16.3 points and dishing out 8.6 assists a game. But his team has a grand total of two road wins as they sport the one of the worst overall records in the NBA.
My guess is that both players will get a one-game suspension from the league and life will move on.
You should never throw a punch in a NBA game, but it's crystal clear that Ilgauskas was throwing intentional elbows at the much smaller Wall.
The ole' wily vet got the best of Wall as it's safe to say the Heat would take losing Big Z if the Wiz lost Wall in return.
Let this be a lesson to the rookie...no matter how dirty the opponent is playing—never throw a punch.
