While NBA fans wait for Deron Williams and Chris Paul to possibly hit free agency next summer, there are several good point free-agent guards who will make a big difference to teams this season.
Aaron Brooks is one of those players, and his scoring and playmaking ability will really help any team that needs some offense at the point guard position.
Let's look at where the four top point guards will sign, in no particular order.
1. Mike Bibby
Experienced point guards are needed on every team wishing to contend for the NBA Finals, either as a starter or a backup.
Bibby is a capable backup who is a smart player that does not need the ball to be effective. He is a good spot-up shooter and can knock down three pointers when open.
Teams like San Antonio, Dallas (if JJ Barea leaves) and Miami, Bibby's current team, all could use an experienced backup point guard.
Injuries happen to every team, and Bibby is certainly a player that could handle a starting role on any NBA team.
2. Mario Chalmers
Mario Chalmers has underperformed for much of his brief NBA career after helping Kansas defeat Derrick Rose and Memphis in the 2008 NCAA title game.
Chalmers is not an elite offensive player or defender, but he is a reliable outside shooter. He hit just as many big shots against elite teams in the regular season last year as LeBron James, and he does not shy away from making the game-winning shot.
Chalmers should stay in Miami because he won't get a major payday as a free agent at this stage of his career.
His best bet is to stay with the Heat and improve, then make big money as an unrestricted free agent.
3. JJ Barea
The small guard was a major reason the Dallas Mavericks beat the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals last season, and his impressive play in the playoffs will help him make a lot of money in free agency this season.
Barea is a feisty guard who gives maximum effort every night. His shooting is very good, he takes the ball to the basket with authority and is not fazed by banging with much stronger centers.
Barea proved he could be a big contributor as a backup and a starter last season, which gives him a great amount of versatility.
A team like Chicago, who really needs a scoring guard, could use Barea. You can bet, however, that Mark Cuban and Dallas will want to re-sign him.
4. Aaron Brooks
After a great season in 2010, Brooks had a disappointing year in 2011, but he will still be highly sought in free agency this winter.
Brooks is a quality scorer who can also be an effective playmaker. When given the freedom to create his own offense and set up his teammates, he can be a top point guard.
On a better team than the Phoenix Suns, Brooks will be allowed to do more offensively because he won't compete with Steve Nash for shots at the guard positions.
Brooks will not be an expensive option for teams, so expect many NBA clubs to give him an offer and hope to rediscover his best form.
Teams such as the Miami Heat, Chicago Bulls and Atlanta Hawks all need scoring from the guard spot.
