The plot thickens.
A University of Michigan Lear Jet was seen Friday morning in Baton Rouge, according to the airport flight logs supplied by FlightAware.com, a live flight tracking service.
It’s believed Michigan officials are there to speak with Les Miles about the Michigan coaching job. Miles, whose squad defeated Texas A&M 41-24 Friday night at the Cotton Bowl, was to arrive back in Baton Rouge Saturday
On a similar note, Mississippi State coach Dan Mullin was also reported in Baton Rouge Friday. Mississippi State, you recall, destroyed Michigan 52-14 in the Gator Bowl and was the final blow to Rich Rodriguez’s career in Ann Arbor.
Ironically, Miles was touted to be a top candidate for the Michigan job back in 2007, when it appeared that then-athletic director Bill Martin was playing a cat and mouse game with LSU. Martin was out sailing while Miles was preparing his team for the SEC championship game.
Most recall ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit announcing the morning of the game that Miles had accepted the job.
In fact, Miles hadn’t accepted the job, so he was then forced to deny Herbstreit’s story to his players. Both LSU and Michigan officials were embarrassed.
“There was some misinformation on ESPN and I think it’s imperative that I straighten it out," Miles said.
"I am the head coach at LSU. I will be the head coach at LSU. I have no interest in talking to anybody else. I’ve got a championship game to play, and I am excited about the opportunity of my damn strong football team to play in it. That’s really all I’d like to say.”
After Friday night’s Cotton Bowl, Miles would only speak about how he loved LSU and that he hadn't been contacted by Michigan.
The main difference is that LSU is facing penalties for problems self-reported to the NCAA in 2009. The investigation centers on former assistant coach D.J. McCarthy and former player Akiem Hicks.
Improper visits, phone calls, lodging and transportation are violations which have been sighted. Miles wasn’t implicated but the NCAA could make things very uncomfortable for LSU.
Like Michigan's recent problems with the NCAA, the Tigers initiated self-imposed sanctions by cutting their 2011 recruiting class by two.
Mullin, on the other hand, just completed his second year as head coach at Mississippi State. Many in the Michigan family were impressed with the way his squad dominated the Wolverines. Mullin, who was the offensive coordinator at Florida from 2003-08 might be a good catch for Michigan.
Others still on Michigan wish list are Mike Bellotti, Brady Hoke, Gus Malzahn, Steve Mariucci and several others.
