Terry Francona: Marco Scutaro Is Red Sox' Starting Shortstop

The Red Sox cleared up one issue that figured to get a lot of play during spring training on Thursday when Terry Francona said Marco Scutaro would be the team's starting shortstop.

There had been some chatter recently that Jed Lowrie could supplant Scutaro as the starter. It wasn't just columnists looking to fill time with the Patriots buried or callers to radio stations, either. Theo Epstein said it could happen last week, although he cautioned that any decision would be made by Francona.

The manager doesn't need to wait for until getting to Fort Myers, Fla. to make up his mind. He's sticking with Scutaro and sees Lowrie as a utilityman off the bench.

"Scutaro's our shortstop. (Lowrie) gives us something not a lot of teams can say they have," Francona said. "A switch-hitter than can play first, second, third or short and play a lot. He can play for a week, he can play it for a day, he can play it or two weeks. That at some point is going to probably save us. How many times have you seen where everybody stays healthy?"
