The Chicago Bulls are in the process of making a move that would ship Kyle Korver to the Atlanta Hawks and bring back Kirk Hinrich. While that deal is getting headlines, the Bulls are also attempting to rid themselves of Richard Hamilton's $5 million expiring contract.
According to K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune, the Bulls and Hawks have all but completed the Korver-Hinrich swap, and now Chicago is turning its attention to shedding Hamilton's deal.
Last season the 34-year-old Hamilton played in 28 games for the Bulls (all starts) and averaged 11.6 points, 2.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 24.9 minutes per game. He was clearly not an effective option at shooting guard anymore.
Hamilton's $5 million deal carries just a $1 million guarantee for the 2013-14 season, making it essentially an expiring contract that a team could use as trade ballast later in the season.
Thus far, the Bulls have found no one willing to take Hamilton off their hands.
When Hamilton and Derrick Rose were both healthy and on the floor at the same time, they actually looked good together for stretches of the 2011-12 season. But those stretches were few and far between.
Hamilton could probably still be useful as a bench option on a contending team, as he has a ton of experience. He is a smart and heady player and, at 6'7", has good size for the position.
While the Bulls haven't found a taker for Hamilton, it's a safe bet someone will eventually come calling,
