Winnipeg Should Have Been Informed About Pavelec’s DUI

from Paul Friesen of the Winnipeg Sun, ...should Pavelec’s agent, Allan Walsh of mega-agency Octagon, have informed the Jets of Pavelec’s crime during negotiations, assuming he knew?

That’s an ethical question a few NHL agents were willing to tackle, Wednesday, as long as they got anonymity.

“If I’m negotiating for an injured player, I can’t sell a team broken goods or a tainted product,” one said. “I can’t sell them week-old chicken. To save face, he would have had to disclose that — if he knew. Sooner or later it’s going to pop up. And if you’re upfront about it, you’ll be able to do damage control.”

Telling the team would probably put a “road bump” in the negotiations — “maybe they wouldn’t have a deal done right now,” the agent said — but it shouldn’t hurt a player’s value, at least not in a situation like Pavelec’s, a first-time offender who didn’t hurt anybody.
