If there was ever a time boxing needed Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao to step into a ring together, it's right now.
While Mayweather sits in a jail cell serving out the rest of his 87-day sentence, the boxing world is in flux. Pound-for-pound king Pacquiao lost a horrendous decision to Timothy Bradley in a fight the Pac-man thoroughly dominated, and on Saturday night rising star Amir Khan was shockingly knocked out by Danny Garcia in the fourth-round of their junior welterweight fight.
While Mayweather is stewing in prison, the spot that has given him so much is falling apart. No one can trust judges' decisions any more and no one is sure who the future standard bearers for the fight game will be.
While Pacquiao has agreed to Mayweather's drug testing demands, for some reason he still acts like that is the issue holding the fight up. In reality, the problem is, of course, money. Mayweather categorically refuses to give the Filipino fighter a 50-50 split of revenues from the fight.
When two top fighters face each other, a 50-50 split is customary. In fact, it is little more than a formality. Mayweather's refusal to give Pacquiao an even split of the money is incredibly disrespectful and that is what is holding up the mega-fight everyone wants to see.
Maybe Mayweather's time in jail will help him see the light and maybe he'll finally come to the table and make a fight happen.
The sport needs Pacquiao and Mayweather to finally get in a ring together more than ever right now. It's on Mayweather to make it happen.
