The WWE can only stand by helplessly as they watch a revolving door of WWE Diva departures. First it was the Bella Twins, this past week it was Kelly Kelly and multiple sources (pwinsider.com) are reporting that Beth Phoneix will not be too far behind.
The unsettling trend for the WWE Divas is expected to continue with more lady grapplers reportedly (via wrestlenewz.com) looking to catwalk out of the company and take advantage of life after the WWE—where opportunities for women are as limited as they are erratic—while they are still visually marketable and/or family-oriented.
The WWE seemed to have countered this looming problem with their signing of Sara Del Rey, who is not-so-arguably the best women's wrestler in the world.
But with the Divas division virtually in shambles, any evidence of Sara Del Rey acting as the savior of women's wrestling in the WWE will be unseen by the naked eye since Del Rey is expected to come on board strictly as a trainer.
During a lengthy Q&A session at this weekend's Ohio Comic Con, CM Punk discussed a multitude of interesting topics pertaining to items both in and out of the ring.
One of the more eyebrow-raising comments made by CM Punk came when the current WWE Champion confirmed lingering reports (wrestlingnewsworld.com) about Del Rey's status with the WWE. Punk stated the following about the WWE's hardcore-fan-friendly signing:
"We recently just hired Sara Del Rey to train our future divas. And I know a lot of people are like, ‘Wow, that sucks. Sara should be on television.’ Maybe you’re right. But I’ve talked to her about it, this is her dream job."
Dream job or not, a Divas division now devoid of talent and star power could be facing a continued drought if it is not supplemented with ready-made stars in a timely fashion.
With such a high rate of turnover set to occur in a small window of time, the last thing this division needs is to go into rebuilding mode. Vince McMahon and the WWE brass lack the time and the patience necessary to take a wait-and-see approach with a crop of talent that is seldom featured even when at its strongest.
From a big-picture standpoint, the WWE's signing of a standout female star to train their Divas is a good sign for the company's future plans as it pertains to women's wrestling.
But a better sign for the present, currently represented by a depleted divas division, may involve the WWE's newest trainer taking more of a hands-on approach to saving a struggling entity.
