There are only five days left until the Super Bowl, and we all know what that means. That's right, there are only five days left until the Super Bowl commercials!
Yes, the Packers and Steelers will face off in a tough matchup, but there will be people just as interested in the commercials in between the action. After all, Super Bowl Sunday is one of the biggest days in advertising, and companies generally being their "A" game to the table.
In the case of Cars.com, we have a sneak peek of what we will be seeing during those few hours. In the commercial, talking cars read off reviews of themselves on the internet, complete with jokes about a convertible going "topless" and an SUV being a "gas guzzler".
The commercial looks good and I enjoyed it, but I have one major problem with this situation. As stated, the Super Bowl is five days away. Why are the commercials already up on YouTube? The point is that you get to see these sometimes great commercials for the first time that Sunday.
As an example, last year one of the commercials most remembered was the Snickers one featuring Betty White. If we had seen that on YouTube and on TV in the days leading up to the Super Bowl, it would have been far less memorable, and would have harmed the purpose of putting these commercials in the Super Bowl in the first place.
You put them on during the Super Bowl to get people talking. If people are talking about the commercial now, then they're not going to bother on Sunday.
Don't get me wrong, it's a good commercial, but to put it up well before the Super Bowl not only makes no sense in terms of marketing, but then we're not going to care when we see it on Sunday. We'll have watched it on YouTube, and we'll use the time to grab another beer or bucket of wings.
