Panthers Need to Start From Scratch

Prospects? Make sure they?re good ones. Draft picks? Take ?em. Untouchables? None. The playoffs shouldn?t be a thought this year and only a passing thought for next year.

The past week ? close losses to powerhouses Philadelphia and Detroit, beating good teams from San Jose and Tampa Bay, Monday?s rout by a fast, free-spirited Islanders team ? supports the truth the standings tell about Los Panteros. They?re better than anticipated, yet still living virtually unseen in the dark subway lines running several staircases below Good Street.

It?s just as well. What good would the playoffs do? Well, other than ending an NHL-record run for playoff futility, providing two home games of playoff money and enlightening experience for the kids the Panthers keep around. They?re still too far away for a humiliating first-round loss via sweep to be any long-term help.
