The Toronto Raptors have given New York Knicks restricted free agent Landry Fields a three-year offer sheet worth $20 million, ESPN's Marc Stein reports.
The Knicks have a few days to match the offer, but they almost definitely won't because Fields isn't worth anywhere near $20 million.
So why'd Toronto do it?
Simple: The Knicks had a sign-and-trade on the table with Phoenix that would have sent Steve Nash to New York at $8 million per year and sent Fields and a few other pieces back to Phoenix.
The Raptors desperately want Nash. They offered him an eye-popping three-year, $36 million contract earlier this week.
By giving Fields an offer sheet, Toronto totally blocked the sign-and-trade (the Knicks aren't allowed to trade Fields even if they chose to resign him), and destroyed NY's chances of getting Nash.
On the one hand, it's a brilliant tactical move.
On the other hand, $20 MILLION FOR LANDRY FIELDS WHY?!??!
