Just as WWE COO Triple H seemed ready to relieve John Laurinaitis of his duties as interim RAW general manager last night, The Undertaker's bell tolled, and the road to WrestleMania officially began.
Taker hasn't been seen on television since last year's WrestleMania, when he narrowly escaped a no-holds-barred match against Triple H to run his undefeated streak to 19-0 at the event. The Deadman has nursed injuries since then, but he has come back to make a bid for 20-0.
When The Undertaker silently challenged Triple H to a rematch by looking at the WrestleMania sign and making his signature throat-slashing motion, Triple H didn't respond as expected. The Game simply patted the Deadman on the shoulder and exited the ring.
It would have been very easy for Triple H to accept on the spot, but I already like the direction this angle is heading in. Triple H obviously has remorse for The Undertaker, as he nearly ended his career last year; Taker had to be helped out of the ring, leading Triple H to boast that he had destroyed The Undertaker.
In some ways I expect this to be a reverse of the feud between Taker and Shawn Michaels leading up to their second WrestleMania match. The Undertaker wouldn't give Michaels the time of day, so HBK continually poked and prodded the Deadman, eventually costing him the World Heavyweight Championship and forcing him to accept a match.
I think Triple H will attempt to move forward with business as usual, but he'll be hounded by The Undertaker at every turn. Although Triple H wasn't able to defeat The Undertaker last year, I think Taker is out to prove to Triple H and the world that he can still go and that the fact that he had to be carried off was simply an aberration.
Eventually Triple H will accept, but I think this was a great start to what is sure to be a highly entertaining build to WrestleMania. Many were clamoring for Taker to be a surprise entrant in the Royal Rumble, and while that would have been incredible in its own right, the writers made the right decision.
If Taker's sole purpose and goal is to face Triple H at WrestleMania, then he had no business being in the Rumble match. His interruption on RAW truly came as a surprise to every wrestling fan, and if anyone tells you that they were expecting it, then they're simply lying.
There is no question that The Undertaker is in the twilight of his career, and he could very well be gearing up for his last match, but he is still one of the biggest draws in wrestling. He proved last year that he is still capable of putting on classic matches, and I wouldn't expect any less out of Taker and Triple H this year.
Some will complain about not wanting to see The Undertaker face Triple H at WrestleMania for a third time, but the storyline begs for that to happen. Triple H has bragged about putting the Deadman out of commission, so it's only natural that he would return to prove Triple H wrong.
When you add another potential classic between The Undertaker and Triple H to a card that already includes The Rock vs. John Cena and most likely CM Punk vs. Chris Jericho, WrestleMania XXVIII truly can be one of the best ever.
