Vitali Klitschko is one of the best boxers in the world, if not the best, and he proved that by beating Dereck Chisora 118-110, 118-110, and 119-111 in a unanimous decision.
If he's not the best in the world—there are a pair of boxers that would love to disagree, if only they were to fight each other—there is absolutely no doubting that he is the best heavyweight in the world.
His title as the WBC Heavyweight Champ states that loud and clear, but it's the defense of his title that may be even more impressive.
The guy just does not lose, and he takes challengers on like they are rag dolls.
To be fair to Chisora, he actually was able to take Klitschko to a decision, which is extremely impressive considering the champion has 40 KO's to his name.
That being said, in the end it was Klitschko who did enough to fend off his attacker, take control of the fight and earn the decision.
Is there any doubt that this guy is a deserving champion?
This win over Chisora marks his tenth title defense since becoming the champion in 2004 according to the Associated Press via the Washington Post. That stat in itself is impressive enough, but if you're looking for the true heart of a champion check out this quote from Klitschko via the AP report:
“I’m not proud of my performance tonight because I feel I let my fans down,” Klitschko said.
This is a 40-year old world champion boxer that just went the distance with a 28-year old opponent and defended his belt, yet he's disappointed that he couldn't give his fans more?
Klitschko is a champion, there is no doubt about it.
Most would be happy to get the win and move on, especially at his age, but it's rather obvious that he demands much more from himself.
Klitschko doesn't just want to win, he wants to dominate. He may not have been dominant against Chisora, but he did prove one thing:
He deserves every bit of his WBC Heavyweight title.
