Carson Palmer was signed in a state of desperation by coach Hue Jackson who needed a quarterback other than Kyle Boller (obviously).
Their history is well-documented and it is clear why Jackson chose Palmer, but that doesn't mean it was the right move.
There are arguments for both sides of the Palmer story, but the side that makes the most sense, sadly, points to him not starting in the 2012-2013 season. It is sad because of what the Raiders had to give up to get a man who has shown he is not the ideal quarterback of the future.
Stats speak for themselves. Palmer went 4-6 at the end of the season, while Jason Campbell went 3-2 at the beginning.
Yes, Palmer didn't have Darren McFadden, but he had a bevy of receivers and a very motivated Michael Bush at his side.
Also, Palmer, having previously been with Jackson in both college and the pros, went into a system that he was already familiar with, at least enough to feasibly win games. Campbell also had a better passer rating than Palmer finished with by four percent.
Palmer should not be the Raiders starting quarterback in 2012 because he's not what the team is looking for long-term. He's 32 years old, which is not young by football standards. Beyond that, he won't mesh will with the West Coast offense.
General manager Reggie McKenzie came from Green Bay where he saw the success of this system and has made it known that he plans to implement it in some way.
Even in his younger days, Palmer was unsuccessful with this system, so as he ages there's no reason to believe he will be any better.
McKenzie has also wasted no time showing everyone that he is planning ahead and looking to the future. Investing in a veteran quarterback who can't effectively run his offense is not in the cards.
Unfortunately, Campbell wasn't ideal for a West Coast offense either, which means the Raiders are going to need a new starting quarterback who can get the job done.
This may come from the draft, since Terrell Pryor likely needs more grooming. There are also some options in free agency as well as sleepers late in the draft.
One thing is sure: Carson Palmer should not be the Raiders starting QB in 2012.
