St. Louis Cardinals: The Cards Are Back in 1st...But For How Long?

St. Louis Cardinals Get Back On Track After Lost Weekend In Cincinnati, How Long Will They Stay On Top?

The St. Louis Cardinals have regained control of the NL Central with Thursday's 4-2 win over the Astros. It was their fourth win in a row after being swept by division rival Cincinnati.

The Cards stand at 26-19 and half-a-game ahead of the Reds.

St. Louis is doing this despite a laundry list of problems.

Adam Wainwright was lost for the year in February, the Albert Pujols contract situation, Tony La Russa missing games for health related issues, injuries to Matt Holiday, Lance Berkman and Colby Rasmus and the struggles of former Cy Young winner Chris Carpenter.

Yet here they are on May 19th, looking down on the rest of the division without getting much help from Mr. Pujols.

Pujols has had seven homeruns since April 23rd and the drought tops his previous worst of 89 at-bats.

They have the top average, best on-base percentage and most runs scored in all of baseball. With today's eight innings of two-run ball, Kyle McClellan improves to 6-1 on the season. He is the first pitcher in all of baseball to reach the six win plateau. Jamie Garcia is 5-0 with a 1.64 ERA. Kyle Lohse also has five wins.

It's been a complete team effort and the Cards have to be pleased with the results.

Yet the Cincinnati Reds lurk on their tails with still over 100 games remaining. The Milwaukee Brewers are playing better since the return of Zack Greinke.

No need to crown the Cards champs just yet...but it looks as if they will be battling for the title all year.
