NHL Playoffs 2011 and Will Red Wings Defender Nicklas Lidstrom Retire Now?
After being ousted by the San Jose Sharks in seven games during this postseason, the Detroit Red Wings are facing some really big questions on their roster.
No questions loom larger than those surrounding the captain and veteran defender Nicklas Lidstrom.
Lidstrom has been a staple on the blue line in Detroit for years and has been a huge part of the Stanley Cup success of the team through the late 90s and early 2000s.

Lidstrom told Fox News:
I'm sure it's going to be the same process as last year, I don't think it'll be that big of a difference. You take everything into account. How you feel. Motivation. Family situation. Take everything into account before you make a decision. I don't think it'll have a whole lot to do with my decision. It's more how I feel -- if I feel I can do it again and if I'm motivated to do it. It'll be the same process I went through last year. I'm going to have my sit-down with (GM) Kenny (Holland), as all players do at the end of the year. I'll have a discussion with him and go from there. I'm sure he wants to know before July 1 what my thinking is.
While I firmly believe that Lidstrom has a ton of fuel left in his tank, I would be much happier if he walked away from the game before his age showed through.
As of right now, Lidstrom is one of the greatest defenders of all time and as time goes on, if he walks away now, there will be nothing to taint the legacy. If he stays and does terrible, that could be a blemish on an otherwise perfect career.
