Hockey Talk

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal, • If the Boston Bruins don?t have Patrice Bergeron for the start of the next series with the Lightning (concussion after Claude Giroux hit Friday) that leaves a crater-like hole in the middle. He?s their best faceoff guy and had 12 points in the playoffs?.

• I know the Flyers love Jeff Carter, but Claude Giroux is every bit as good, so why couldn?t you offer him to Minnesota for Niklas Backstrom? The Wild can?t make the playoffs with their $6-million goalie and badly need more offence.

• Paul Coffey will most likely be advising the Pittsburgh Penguins on their power play next season, from afar (he?s not coming aboard as a coach, not with the two Toyota dealerships he owns in the Toronto area). You know when the Penguins owner Mario Lemieux and Coffey are texting one another in the playoffs, Mario wants Coffey?s opinion

• If the Wings go out on Sunday, what do you bet they tell us that Johan Franzen has a high ankle sprain but gutted it out to play? He?s a shadow of his usual self. Too bad, because Detroit sorely misses his big-game scoring.
