2012 NFL Mock Draft: Todd McShay Says Quinton Coples to Panters at No. 2

2012 NFL Mock Draft Delivers Panthers Great Local Product

2nd Choice: Carolina Panthers select Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolin

McShay's McExplanation:

Coples is a 6-foot-6, 255-pound end with great versatility. He explodes off the ball, is powerful and quick and was all over the field in 2010.

I suppose the jury is still out on the pro promise of the Butch Davis-UNC defensive stars, i.e.  Robert Quinn, Marvin Austin, and Bruce Carter. Maybe it's the system, maybe the players.

But given Coples size and athleticism, it seems like a worthy choice.

He is a built to play defensive end--not outside linebacker like Quinn will become in St. Louis--so Ron Rivera can stick him there, potentially opposite Charles Johnson and have a nice pass rush in 2012.

Still, if we learned anything about ACC "elite" defensive lineman (aka Da'Quan Bowers) I hope McShay used a pencil with an eraser when writing up his big board.

That's not to say that Coples is headed for a knee injury that will slow him down and hurt his draft stock. Just that these early drafts are extremely fluid and defensive players are always rising and falling, depending on what we see from them during the college season.
