The San Diego Chargers and Denver Broncos are all set to do battle on Monday Night Football in what could be a wild AFC West shootout.
San Diego’s Philip Rivers and Denver’s Kyle Orton are the two top gunslingers in the league this year, and they’ll have their guns-a-blazin’ Monday night. NFL odds makers have listed the Chargers as a 9.5-point favorite with the total set at 50.5.
Rivers leads the NFL with 2,944 passing yards. Orton is second with 2,806. Both players figure to have a shot at Dan Marino’s 1984 single-season record of 5,084 passing yards.
The Chargers have put a three-game losing streak behind them with back-to-back wins over Tennessee and Houston. Despite their slow start, the 4-5 Chargers sit just one game before Kansas City and Oakland in the AFC West. But if they are going to win a fifth-straight division title, they must start winning some division games.
The Chargers are 0-2 in division play in 2010 with losses to Kansas City and Oakland.
While we have addressed San Diego’s turnover problems and poor special teams play in previous reports, injuries have also played a part in its slow start. The good news is San Diego is looking healthier following its bye.
Wide receiver Legedu Naanee and Malcom Floyd are both expected to return from hamstring injuries. Naanee has missed the last four games, and Floyd has missed the last three.
The Chargers could also get Pro Bowl tight end Antonio Gates back this week. Gates, who is tied for the league lead with nine touchdown grabs, missed San Diego’s last game at Houston with a plantar fascia injury in his right foot. His status has been upgraded to probable for Monday.
The Chargers are 20-6 against the spread in their last 26 home games as a favorite of 3.5 to 10.0 points.
Denver helped San Diego out with a dominant 49-29 win over Kansas City last week. Now, it looks to help itself by upsetting San Diego on the road for a second straight season. If Denver is able to shock the Chargers, Orton figures to have a lot to do with it.
Orton threw for a career-best 3,802 yards in his first season with the Broncos, and it looks like he’ll crush that number this season.
Many thought Denver’s passing game would struggle without Brandon Marshall, but it has gotten even better. Orton torched Kansas City for 296 yards and a career-best four touchdowns last Sunday.
Without Marshall, Orton has gotten very familiar with Brandon Lloyd, who leads the NFL with 968 receiving yards. He has been nothing short of awesome, hauling in 15 passes of 25 or more yards – best in the NFL.
While bye weeks are often beneficial, that hasn’t been the case for San Diego in regard to the point spread. In fact, the Chargers are just 1-5 against the number in their last six games following a bye week.
Last Monday night, Jimmy Boyd gave his clients the Eagles -3 and watched them run up the score on Washington. Make sure you’re signing up for Jimmy's NFL picks to see who he is playing this week!
