Toronto Raptors: Why Jonas Valanciunas' Injury Is Not as Serious as It May Seem

Recent news has surfaced about Toronto Raptors rookie Jonas Valanciunas suffering a calf strain during a workout last week. The story was reported by CBS Sports, who quoted head coach Dwane Casey saying, "He felt something pop...your first thought is it's an Achilles Tendon [tear]. But it wasn't, it was a calf strain."

Luckily for Raptors fans, the injury is not serious; although images did pop up on the internet of Valanciunas in a walking boot, his face did not show any pain, it looked like he was walking fine without help and last but not least, he was not using crutches.

The fact that he is walking on the walking boot and not using crutches should be a sigh of relief for all Raptor fans out there. This means he can put pressure on his foot and walk, but it means he might not be fully recovered by the time training camp starts next week.

The kind of strain that Valanciunas has sustained is one that heals within a couple of weeks. If that is really the case for Jonas, then he will be ready for the Raptors' first preseason game.

He might not be starting off the bat, but as time goes on, Valanciunas will prove that he was worth the wait—and although his rookie season might disappoint some who have extremely high expectations for the young guy, struggles are a regular part of a young player's career.

Some fans might be a little worried that this injury might be recurring, but the Raptors have a very good medical staff—they were selected as the medical staff for the Eastern Conference during the All-Star game—so Raptors fans can be assured that Valanciunas is in good hands.

The NBA season is right around the corner and many fans are awaiting what is one of the most anticipated seasons in Raptors history.
