Sergio Aguero returned from injury on Sunday, and he provided quite a lift for the Blues.
Aguero has been a star for most of his career, and he has continued that success in England. He's won multiple youth World Cups, European club championships and an English Premier League title.
When you add that all up, it's pretty clear that this 24-year-old Argentine is arguably the most successful young player in the world.
Beginnings at Independiente
Sergio Aguero started training at Independiente at nine years old. He was a promising talent from a young age, and it was only a matter of time before he made his debut.
In July of 2003, Aguero began his professional career a few weeks after his 15th birthday. He was the youngest debutant in the history of the Argentine Premier League, even younger than the previous record holder, Diego Maradona.
Immediately, Aguero's expectations were through the roof, and after a €20 million transfer to Atletico Madrid, the expectations only grew.
Success with Argentina
As successful as Aguero has been at the club level, he has been equally successful for Argentina. As a 17-year-old, he helped his country win the 2005 U-20 World Cup with the help of Lionel Messi. Then, two years later, Aguero took control of the team, winning the Golden Boot, Golden Ball and the tournament.
The very next summer, 2008, Aguero helped Argentina win a gold medal in Beijing, scoring two goals against Brazil in the semifinal. Aguero made an appearance at the 2010 World Cup, but he didn't score a goal; however, he did tally an assist in a 4-1 victory over South Korea.
He also played in the 2011 Copa America, scoring three goals. He was subbed off before extra time in the quarterfinal, and Argentina ended up losing in penalty kicks to the eventual champions, Uruguay.
Time at Atletico Madrid
Aguero's adjustment to Spain was a little slow. In his first season at Atletico, as an 18-year-old, he played with Fernando Torres and only managed six league goals.
Then Torres left, and Atletico brought in Diego Forlan. Aguero played well with him immediately and had a fantastic season. He scored 19 league goals, earning himself Ibero-American Player of the Year honors for La Liga. Other than Aguero, Messi is the only other player to win that award since 2006 (five times).
Aguero's numbers dipped slightly over the next two years, but his contributions were still great. He helped Atletico qualify for the Champions League for the 2009-10 campaign, and the squad responded by winning the Europa League. The team was succeeding despite jaw-dropping numbers from the Argentine.
Then Aguero turned it back on. In his last season in Spain, he netted 20 league goals, which was good for third in the league. His performance caught Manchester City's eye, as the affluent English side brought him in for €45 million.
First Manchester City Season
Aguero didn't waste any time making an impact at Manchester City. After sitting out the first two matches of the year, he came on in the 59th minute in the first Premier League match of the year. Although he only played a half hour, the Argentine scored two goals and notched an assist, immediately winning over fans at the Etihad.
Aguero went on to have one of the most successful seasons in the history of the club. He scored 30 goals, becoming the first City player to do so since the 1971-72 season. He scored a 94th-minute goal in a wild 3-2 victory over Queens Park Rangers on the last day of the season.
The win gave the title to City over Manchester United, which made it all the more sweeter. Additionally, it was the first title in 44 years for City.
Future
Aguero's best years are ahead of him, which is hard to believe. He's already won a handful of trophies, multiple individual awards and the heart of every Manchester City fan alive. And he's only 24.
Aguero is a complete centre-forward. His movement opens things up for everyone, including himself. His foot skills help him rack up assists and goals in dozens. Plus, his speed and agility allow him to create space in very narrow areas.
Aguero is arguably the most dynamic player in the Premier League. He has all the necessary tools, and his work ethic puts him on another level. Considering that he's already a cult legend, it's clear that Aguero is a superstar who will continue to get better.
