The San Diego Chargers have taken the stadium naming business to an entirely new level that will certainly annoy sports fans.
The Chargers announced this weekend that they are temporarily changing the name of their stadium from Qualcomm Stadium to Snapdragon Stadium. The move is designed to highlight the Snapdragon processors, a mobile processor produced by Qualcomm.
Last night's Sunday Night Football match-up between the San Diego Chargers and the Baltimore Ravens was the first of three nationally televised games in which the stadium will use the temporary name. The stadium will also host two college football bowl games, including the equally annoyingly named San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl and the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl.
At some point, stadiums will cease having names that the fans can attach themselves to. Rather we could be headed for a system in which the naming rights are sold on a game-by-game basis, in order to maximize the return generated by big events.
