Former Arkansas head coach Bobby Petrino, who has fired by the university earlier in the week, was wise to decline an appeal process since the chances of him getting his job back were virtually nonexistent. That left no reason for him to drag out the process.
Kurt Voigt of the Associated Press reports Petrino could have appealed the firing or attempted to claim money lost by the decision, but opted against both options.
Former Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino has notified the university he won't appeal his firing nor will he seek any of the $18 million buyout that was part of his contract.
Petrino's agent, Russ Campbell, sent an e-mail to Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long Thursday night saying Petrino has accepted "responsibility for the events that led to the University's decision to terminate his contract."
Petrino knows his relationship with former Razorbacks volleyball star and staff member Jessica Dorrell was a mistake. He dug himself a hole that included text messages and phone calls, and knew he wouldn't be able to get out of it.
His main focus now will be getting another job. The only way he was going to make that happen was by putting this drama behind him and starting to rebuild his image. Accepting responsibility for his actions and declining the appeal was a key step.
Another opportunity won't likely arise this offseason because the scandal remains fresh in everybody's mind, but time heals all wounds. By next winter teams will be be crazy not to at least consider Petrino based on past performance.

He made some poor choices, but they shouldn't be enough to deny him future jobs. Coaches who win nearly 75 percent of their games and consistently bring in terrific recruiting classes are rare commodities, so he will still have plenty of value to some program.
If he would have kept pushing an appeal and tried to collect the $18 million, it would have only tainted his image even more. Also, who knows what other details would have emerged during the process. This decision allows the story to fade away with a whimper.
Now, Petrino can fade into the background for awhile and take care of the family issues that likely arose from this mess. Once those problems have been addressed, he can sit back and wait for the calls to starting coming in.
He's rubbed a lot of people the wrong way with his attitude and poor decisions, but nobody can deny his ability to build a winning program.
And winning tends to lead to selective memory for athletic directors around the country.
