Saturday Night Hockey Points

from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,  • What a hockey summer this might be: The possibilities of Tim Thomas, Roberto Luongo, Rick Nash and Jarome Iginla being available, and that’s just the beginning.

• Pavel Datsyuk didn’t disappear in the Detroit-Nashville series. Ryan Suter made him disappear. Wouldn’t be the least bit surprised to see the Red Wings go hard after Suter in free agency should he not re-sign with the Predators ... The Red Wings, by the way, don’t like paying big money for goalies. But the big money goalie, Pekka Rinne, facing a playoff-most 160 shots in five games, beat the Wings almost by himself.

• Edmonton Oilers GM Steve Tambellini says he won’t trade the first pick in the NHL Draft. The question is: Why not? It’s Tambellini’s responsibility to make the Oilers the best team possible. Getting a defenceman and trading down to another early pick will improve his club. Adding another teenaged forward may not.
