Kyle Williams had an awful day, and thanks to his fumbling fingers, his season is now over. While it is true that this is a team sport and football games are won and lost as a team, it is impossible to escape the conclusion that Williams almost single-handedly blew this game.
That is what happens when you fumble a punt in overtime. The second-year pro fielded the boot just inside his 20-yard line and started running. He did not make it far before the Giants' Jacquain Williams was able to get a hand on the ball and knock it loose.
The Giants recovered just inside the 49ers 25-yard line. From there, they were able to advance the ball and then hit a chip shot field goal for the right to advance to the Super Bowl with a 20-17 win.
Williams was undoubtedly pressing to make a big return, as he was a big part of the reason this game was in overtime in the first place.
The return man whiffed on a punt early in the fourth quarter deep in the 49ers territory that led to the Giants scoring a touchdown and taking the lead.
It was just a horrendous day for the 49ers back-up kick returner, who was playing due to an injury to Ted Ginn, Jr.
Williams now is facing a long offseason where the majority of 49ers fans will be pointing the finger at him for their team's failure.
