These NBA rumors are like my Saturday night experiences at the bar.
I can’t stop talking to my friends (NBA writers) about the attractive female at the opposite end of the room (Chris Paul), but there’s no chance she’ll ever come home with me (New York Knicks).
The lockout robbed NBA columnists, bloggers and fans of their favorite pastime: speculation.
Which is why this past week – the first opportunity for the above to talk about Russell Westbrook, Thunder point guard, and not Westbrook, the biggest hipster at union meetings – has featured more rumors than Mutant Pizza possibilities.
Here’s the thing – most, if not all, of these rumblings aren’t going to happen.
And I don’t want them to stop.
Paul to the Knicks? They don’t have the money or the assets, unless Carmelo Anthony or Amar’e Stoudemire is shipped out.
Dwight Howard to the Nets? Not without a point guard.
Speculation has ranged from the absurd – with the Celtics doing everything they can to unload Rajon Rondo, including attempting to re-gift Jeff Green, along with Rondo, to the Thunder for Kendrick Perkins and Westbrook in a deal that would have technically been impossible to complete.
To the obvious – with the Bulls’ announcing that extending the contract of the reigning MVP and Chicago’s prodigal son, Derrick Rose, is their top priority.
Oh, really.
Caron Butler is even drawing headlines by telling people he’s working out in Chicago, and hopes, “I don’t have to leave.” (hint, hint.)
The frequency at which these rumors are percolating is bordering on ridiculousness.
In the time it’s taken to write this, Paul has reportedly reaffirmed his desire to play in New York. And to play with Howard.
Sure, why not?
It seems like an eternity since Paul told reporters, “My heart is in New Orleans” – on Tuesday.
And therein lies the beauty resulting from five months of discussions of nothing but BRI, stakeouts and “how u.”
An entire off-season’s worth of player movement speculation has been condensed into six days. Trades, signings or amnesty cuts can’t even become official for another week!
The only thing rivaling the next eight days will be the time I received a Nintendo 64 for Hanukkah.
For those that say, “no one cares about the NBA” – you’re kidding yourself.
Mike Miller is trending nationwide – for having hernia surgery.
If you think this is fun, just wait until these players actually play a basketball game.
