Finishing the Job
Guillermo Garcia-Lopez reached the Bangkok semis last week, a noteworthy achievement considering that he was ranked outside the Top 50. There, he upset Rafael Nadal in a performance that he called ?the best victory of my career.? The next day, Garcia-Lopez won the final. That win earned far fewer headlines, but it?s also worthy of praise. The possibility of a letdown was at an all-time high after his semifinal shocker, but the Spaniard dropped Jarkko Nieminen in three sets to snag his second career title. In sports, letdowns happen all the time after emotionally charged triumphs: The New York Yankees? loss to the Florida Marlins in the 2003 World Series, after the Yanks completed a stirring comeback over the Boston Red Sox in the ALCS, immediately comes to mind. But like the New York Jets, who followed up a prime-time win in Miami by clobbering the Buffalo Bills, Garcia-Lopez didn?t let up on Sunday after his statement-making victory. Now, Guillermo, you can relax.

Good, Bad, Ugly: Tokyo
Francesca Schiavone seems to be on the ascent again. The Italian appeared to mail in the summer hard-court stretch after winning Roland Garros, but validated her high seeding at Flushing Meadows with a run to the quarters. She followed that up with a semifinal in Tokyo, her first tournament since the Open. That?s good news for Italy, which faces the United States on a hard court in the Fed Cup final next month.

Elena Dementieva?s loss to Caroline Wozniacki in the Tokyo final was disappointing: The Russian hadn?t dropped a set all week and she took the first set against the Dane 6-1. Then she won just five games the rest of the way. While we?ve seen this from Dementieva in crunch time before, Julia Goerges? third-round loss in Tokyo may have been tougher to swallow. The young German beat former No. 1 Dinara Safina in the opening round, then took out fourth-seeded Sam Stosur in straight sets. With a quarterfinal berth on the line, Georges promptly lost 6-3, 6-0?to teenage qualifier Coco Vandeweghe.
